The sociological tide may indeed be turning. Many will understand, get educated, and become allies. Some folks will come “kicking-and-screaming”, but ultimately acquiesce. Others—THANKFULLY—will never comprehend. So be it.
This is America. To my white friends, these people live in your communities. They are in your families. How will you change them?

𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝗡𝗘𝗪 𝗬𝗢𝗥𝗞 𝗖𝗜𝗧𝗬 - 𝗨𝗡𝗜𝗩𝗘𝗥𝗦𝗜𝗧𝗬 𝗢𝗙 𝗛𝗔𝗪𝗔𝗜𝗜 𝗖𝗢𝗡𝗡𝗘𝗖𝗧𝗜𝗢𝗡 𝗢𝗙 𝗧𝗛𝗘 𝟭𝟵𝟳𝟬'𝗦 Tom Henderson was born in Newberry, SC, the family moved to New York and Tom became an absolute star at DeWitt Clinton High School in the Bronx. He first attended junior college then played for the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors from 1972-74. The 1st-team All-American was drafted in the 1st round of the 1974 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks; 1978. He was an NBA Champ with the Washington Bullets and a member of the 1972 Olympic team. Reggie Carter, played at Long Island Lutheran High School in Brookville/NYC and played his freshman season at Hawaii but transferred and played at St. John's from 1975–1976. Drafted in the 2nd round by the New York Knicks in 1979 and played 2 seasons. Reggie Carter passed away on December 24, 1999. Victor Kelly, born in the Bronx, starred at Benjamin Franklin High School. The 5'8" backcourt wizard was a 3-time MVP of the famous New York vs. Philadelphia Summer All-Star Game. He transferred from USC and holds the University of Hawaii record for most free throws made in a single game without missing. (13-13). Melton Werts was born in Philadelphia, PA, but a familiar figure in New York leagues like The Rucker. He attended the famed Laurinburg Institute in North Carolina through the New York Pipeline. The 6'9" center"spent so much time playing in the NYC summer leagues he was often mistakenly claimed by New York hoops historians and journalists as a New Yorker. He is still the all-time leading rebounder in Hawaii history with 1,098 career rebounds. Keith Fryson, was born and raised in Harlem, and is a NYC playgroud legend. The 1st-Team All-City selection at Brandeis High School in Manhattan was physical, but smooth, fluid 6'5" swingman who brought his magical scoring flair to Hawaii after two seasons of junior college. He was recently inducted into the Real Harlem Basketball Players Hall of Fame! Vern Gibson: A 6'2" freshman guard from New York who arrived at Hawaii for the 1973–1974 season. Vernon was a highly talented and versatile New York backcourt entertainer who was affectionately given the nickname "Showboat" on the playgrounds of New York. His flashy, fluid moves to the basketball and crowd-pleasing passes and defensive plays, were a far cry from his low-key, easy going demeaner. After only 8 games at the University of Hawaii, Gibson quietly walked away from the game, pursuing a successful career in finance, I am told. Keith Bowman: A physical 6'8", 200-pound junior forward from New York, N.Y. who played on the 1973–1974 team. Bowman originally played his high school ball at Savannah High School before transferring to UH via Southwestern Louisiana. The NYC - Hawaii express is still operating today! James Worthy tells a story how he almost got traded from the showtime Lakers: “We had for the first time beaten the Celtics in the NBA Championship in 85. Come back in ‘86 and we lose to the Houston Rockets in the Western Conference Finals and I’m back home in North Carolina watching the Draft like everybody else’s draft day and I’m feeling comfortable, you know, protected and I hear the announcer say, “Up next, the Dallas Mavericks.” And I’m just, you know, chilling on the couch and they said, “It appears that the Dallas Mavericks is offering a trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, James Worthy for Mark Agurie and Roy Tarpley and draft pick.” Everting stopped on pause and I was like really? So they kept saying it. I got mad. Reporter called me. I went off.”

A priest had to be carried out of a Colorado ICE detention center by two other detainees after a GEO Group employee allegedly refused to allow him to use the wheelchair he used in the facility all the way to the car for his release. Rev. Edward Nalwamba has been at the ICE Aurora immigrant detention center for 13 months, and was finally released after ICE failed to deport him earlier this June, despite his scheduled deportation. Nalwamba has been in the country for 25 years and was not in a wheelchair before entering the facility. His attorney, Joy Athanasiou, says a respiratory disease went untreated, which led to his worsening health while in ICE custody. Nalwamba says that other countries treat their livestock better than he was treated while detained. Geo Group, ICE's largest contractor and one of the leading private prison companies in the country, reported record profits in 2025, according to the Brennan Center for Justice. A police officer walked up the driveway of a house in a Houston suburb, pushed a woman against the garage door, and shot her son in the chest when he got up to object. It was his own driveway. It was his own mother. Robbie Tolan is the nephew of a Major League Baseball player. The car was his. Bellaire, Texas, 31 December 2008, around two in the morning. Robbie Tolan, 23, and his cousin had just got home from a late trip out. An officer ran the plate and typed a digit wrong. The system returned the car as stolen. It was not. It was Robbie Tolan's car, parked in front of the house he lived in with his parents. Officers ordered the two young men to the ground in the front garden. Tolan's parents came out in their night clothes and told the police this was their house, their son, their car. Sergeant Jeffrey Cotton arrived. He took hold of Marian Tolan and pushed her against the garage door. Robbie, on the ground, pushed himself up to object to his mother being handled. Cotton shot him three times from about fifteen or twenty feet. One bullet went through his lung and lodged near his liver. He survived. The bullet is still in him. His baseball career — he had been a prospect in the Washington Nationals system — was over. Cotton was charged with aggravated assault. In 2010 a jury acquitted him. The civil case went all the way to the Supreme Court of the United States, which in 2014 ruled unanimously in Tolan's favour on qualified immunity — holding that the lower courts had improperly weighed the facts in the officer's favour. *Tolan v. Cotton* is now a standard citation. He was in his own driveway. His parents were on their own porch. His father is Bobby Tolan, who played in the World Series. None of it counted, because somebody typed a letter wrong and then a sergeant did not like being told whose house it was. Robbie Tolan was shot by a police officer in his own driveway after a mistaken license-plate entry led police to believe his car was stolen. When he tried to protect his mother, he was shot three times. He survived, but his baseball career was over. The officer was acquitted. His family was home. His car was his own. And one mistake changed his life forever. Read our book which confronts more stories like this that demand accountability, and help keep them from being erased savvypurchase.samcart.com/pr…

He stepped outside a restaurant in Beverly Hills to put money in a parking meter. Six hours later Charles Belk was still in a cell, barefoot, having been handcuffed on the pavement in front of a crowd in his own neighbourhood. He is a film producer. He had done nothing. 22nd August 2014, during the Emmy weekend. Belk, 51, had been at a business dinner. He walked out to feed the meter. Police surrounded him, handcuffed him, took his shoes, and sat him on the kerb in front of the restaurant while people filmed on their phones. A bank had been robbed nearby. The description police were working from was a tall, bald Black man. Belk is tall and bald. That was the match. That was the entirety of the match. He was held for about six hours on suspicion of robbery before surveillance footage was reviewed and he was released without charge. His car was impounded. He had to post bail to get out, and it took days to get that back. He wrote about it afterwards, and the paragraph people quote is the one where he lists what he was doing: a business dinner, a parking meter, a pair of shoes taken off him on a public street. Here is the part worth your attention. Charles Belk produced films. He had a degree in engineering and an MBA. He was in a wealthy part of Los Angeles in a suit on a Friday night. None of that is a defence against a description that says tall, bald, Black, because that description is not a description. It is a category, and there were about a hundred thousand men in that county who fit it. Six hours, barefoot, for a parking meter.
