Tim Farron, "The unpleasantness about this debate is only matched by the lack of proper information" #BBCQT "85% of refugees settle in the country next to where they come from" "The French take 3x more refugees than we do" "The Germans take 4x more refugees than we do" "If you put us back in the European Union, we are 19th in the league table when it comes to the number of refugees we take per capita" "Do we need deterrents? Yes. The best deterrents is competence. If we assess people when they arrive - and they are not illegal immigrants - they are people seeking asylum.. From Sudan.. Afghanistan.. Iran.. Syria.. 90%+ turn out to be genuine refugees" "If we have a competent government, and we haven't had one, let's see about this one.. And you assess them quickly.. And return the ones that are not refugees" "That is your deterrent" "Rwanda was a waste of money.. If they spent that money on case workers we could have processed these people, returned the ones that weren't refugees in a humane way, and let th eones who are genuine refugees, become British, pay their taxes, be part of our country, and we should be proud to admit them" Very well said @timfarron πŸ‘

With warmest thanks to Tessa Murdoch for suggesting we write this and co-authoring - I had an absolute ball, and hope that others enjoy reading the article we wrote together!

Hate is not patriotic. Hate is not British. Hate is cowardly, deplorable and wrong. Criminality, especially in the name of hate, must face the full force of the law. Our diversity is our strength. No racist can ever change that.

πŸ‡§πŸ‡ͺ news today, from Bloomberg: NYSE losses y'day: world top 500 wealthiest lost $ 134 billion value. In one day! Bezos lost $15bn. Musk $6.6bn (still worth $235bn). Zuckerberg $3bn. Not on @BBCNews, only riots & Olympics, yet may have major implications for πŸ‡¬πŸ‡§ economy.

Horrific to see these in #DuntonGreeen (h/t @ToniBono). Please inform rail authorities and police if you see them.
⚠️ SAFETY ALERT It has been brought to our attention that dangerous stickers have been discovered at a railway station that, once removed, have razor blades stuck to them. Please take extreme care and do not attempt to remove them.

Chancellor Reeves says they have a Β£20bn hole to fill to meet annual spending commitments due to the state of the #economy they've inherited 3 quick & fair ways to not just plug the hole, but invest more in public services in crisis 1. Give HMRC Β£200m additional funding to close the tax gap = raising Β£32bn 2. Standardise capital gains with income tax = raising up to Β£15.2bn a year 3. 1-2% wealth tax on assets over Β£10 million = raising up to Β£22bn a year That's Β£69.2bn #KeirStarmer

Ten years ago this month that David Cameron dispensed with my services as AG. I had told him that his plans to scrap the HRA and threaten to leave the ECHR if it proved incompatible with his British Bill of Rights were unworkable and would not help solve our security or immigration challenges one bit. So it proved. When published, his plans were quickly shown to be flawed and never implemented. Ten years on, despite the repeated huffing and puffing, we still have both the HRA and the ECHR. This despite having had Suella Braverman as both Home Secretary and as a parody AG. One might have hoped that the penny would have dropped that the policy serves no useful purpose, as any minor benefit will be entirely outweighed by the downsides. We must be thankful that Rishi Sunak seems to have realised this as did the last AG Victoria Prentis. So it is depressing to see candidates for the Conservative leadership such as Tom Tugendhat return yet again to this theme. It has become a kind of ritual, without which no candidate feels they could be acceptable to the membership. And that I am afraid also shows how the Conservative Party continues to be mired in ideological fantasies that lead directly to its wipe out this year. For a Party whose members used to laugh at the inanity of Labour supporters singing the Red Flag at the end of their conferences, it is a sad reflection on where common sense has gone.

A lot of the issues-based opinion polling during the #GE2024 showed people had a tendency to romanticise @UKLabour and its policy positions. The @LibDems have more redistributive tax, and more generous benefits policies. Never waste an opportunity to fight for these

Uplifting news. Thank goodness for a new Govt that understands, appreciates & will invest in good relations with our nearest neighbours. I'm a πŸ”Ά, but if this Govt adopts the positive foreign policies our country needs, frankly I'm happy whatever label is in charge.
Lammy has accepted an invitation from the EU foreign affairs chief, Josep Borrell, to attend the October meeting of the EU foreign affairs council – something that was rejected by the previous Conservative government. - The journey back has started. πŸ‘ theguardian.com/politics/art…

Lots of Lib Dem MPs getting down to work today. Sadly, @Richardfor7oaks won’t be amongst them despite a huge 16% swing with support across the #Sevenoaks constituency to slash Laura Trott’s majority. The result now makes us a top Lib Dem target at the next General Election!

The new @LibDems target seats list just dropped. Sevenoaks is in at 14 with a bullet, having campaigned every weekend for 10 months, @SevenoaksLibDem slashed Laura Trott's majority from 21,000 to 5,500. Competitive!
