Conservation works best when science and action on the ground come together. The new Mountain Bongo Recovery Plan builds on years of work by @IUCN, its Species Survival Commission and Antelope Specialist Group, alongside @MKWC_KE . As an IUCN Patron of Nature, I am proud to support this work and a wider ambition for conservation across Africa.

A significant step forward for one of Kenya’s rarest species. The launch of the Mountain Bongo Action Plan 2026–2030 builds on over two decades of conservation at @MKWC_KE , from breeding and rewilding to habitat restoration. Proud to support this work.
Behind every plan, there are people who help bring it to life.
Today, community representatives, researchers and conservation partners gathered for the launch of Kenya’s National Recovery and Action Plan for the Mountain Bongo (2026–2030).

Kenya today marked a major milestone in the recovery of one of its most threatened wildlife species.
At Mount Kenya Wildlife Conservancy in Nanyuki, Cabinet Secretary for Tourism and Wildlife, @rebecca_miano, officially launched the Second Edition National Recovery and Action Plan for the Mountain Bongo 2026–2030 and opened the IUCN Species Survival Commission Steering Committee Meeting.
She was joined by KWS Board Chair Hon. Joseph Lagat, KWS Director General Prof. Erustus Kanga, KWS management, conservation partners, researchers and community representatives.
Found only in Kenya and classified as Critically Endangered, fewer than 65 mountain bongos are estimated to remain in the wild.
But there is hope. The recovery programme has recorded its 100th mountain bongo birth, while Kenya continues to strengthen breeding, genetic management and preparations for future reintroduction.
The new Action Plan targets a 50% increase in the national mountain bongo population by 2030, building towards a self-sustaining population of 750 by 2075.
As CS Miano emphasized, securing the mountain bongo means securing a wider national asset - our forests, water, tourism, livelihoods and communities.
Today, we celebrate progress. Tomorrow, we continue the work.
Together, we can bring the mountain bongo back.

Technology can connect people to nature at scale. Learning about Ant Forest in China reinforced how participation, science and technology can support conservation. For Africa, the opportunity is to restore ecosystems, protect species and engage communities for the long term.

A change in colour on a satellite image is the start of a question: is this forest recovering or thinning? Project Centinela, led by @SpaceAgencyKE with MKWC and @planet, uses satellite data to help answer that across Mount Kenya's forests. #MKWC
More than 100 mountain bongos now live within MKWC's breeding and rewilding programme, working toward Kenya's goal of 750 by 2050.
Getting there takes careful genetic management, restored habitats and years of monitoring. Donate and help carry the #JourneyTo750 forward. mountkenyawildlifeconservanc… #MKWC
Wildlife officer Erick Kibet Kena's conservation career started with a question on a 2017 university fieldwork trip: why was a mountain bongo being treated nearby?
The mountain bongo is critically endangered and found only on Mount Kenya. It's threatened by hunting, disease, predation and habitat loss.
Eric's goal: 40 more bongos within the facility in five years. He's asking for manpower as much as resources. Volunteer: mountkenyawildlifeconservanc…
