I remember a professor in grad school giving me around 100+ negative / corrective comments and zero praise on a paper. Very few in the academy today have the spine, intellect, and care required to give such a generous gift.
I sometimes suspect that, in certain fundamental and humanistic (dare I say "trivial"?) respects, comparing @WYOCathCollege's standards to those of Harvard is an instance of "punching down." thecrimson.com/article/2026/…

Celebrated Mrs. MCC's bday, hiked, re-read the end of the Aeneid, dreamed about Angola, stoked the fire, guy at the bar told me that communists on X said that they thought the best way to split the Right was to blame Charlie K's murder on Israel, listened to millennial indie trash while dancing in the cabin, the stars are blotted out by Diana's glory, glory which illuminates the snowy mountains.
At a cabin in the mountains where you have to make a fire to get any heat. Going to be an awesome weekend.

“Why do people who leave nothing unchallenged still make demands of their own? They live off the fact that gods, fathers, and poets used to exist. The essence of words has been diluted into empty titles. In the animal kingdom, there are parasites that clandestinely hollow out a caterpillar. Eventually, a mere wasp emerges instead of a butterfly. And that is what those people do with their heritage, and with language in particular, as counterfeiters.” –– Ernst Jünger, Eumeswil

I had a dream that I flew to Angola with some friends, and when we got there, the customs agent was a cyclops.

@miltonappl3 was there, and he was most appalled by whatever the cyclops symbolised, but I couldn't get him to tell me what he was thinking. (not joking!)

So many Greek heroes have to disguise themselves as lower animals: Menelaus disguised as a seal, Odysseus disguised as a sheep, dolon disguised as a wolf, the gods disguised as birds, the Acheans disguised as a horse, or even Hercules with his lion skin pelt.

I've only ever signed one employment non-compete clause. I was 20 years old and teaching chess in after-school programs in the Midwest for Chess Scholars, whose after-school instructors were being poached for $5 more a session raise by the unscrupulous Chess Wizards!

What is a man if his chief good and market of his time be to sleep and feed? A beast, no more. Sure He that made us with such large discourse, looking before and after, gave us not that capability of godlike reason to fust in us unused.
How many roads must a man walk down before you call him a man?

My latest at the Lyceum Substack, featuring the political philosophy of @McConaughey, the brilliant mind who waxed metaphysic about how our lives are like traffic lights, who now (again) wants to tell we stupid common folk how to vote before election day. thelyceumclemson.substack.co…

“It would be a good thing to buy books if one could also buy the time to read them; but one usually confuses the purchase of books with the acquisition of their contents. To desire that a man should retain everything he has ever read, is the same as wishing him to retain in his stomach all that he has ever eaten. He has been bodily nourished on what he has eaten, and mentally on what he has read, and through them become what he is..” Schopenhauer

There are weeks when I feel like my insight doesn't increase, and there are days when my insight increases a week's worth. It is one of those good days.

The men of the past could lift rocks alone, that no two men could hope to lift today.
I know I shouldn't be, but I am continually shocked by how many of my grad students fill their written work with incomplete sentences.

In response to Hamlet's last words, Horatio says, "All this can I truly deliver." Jan Blits offers this fecund interpretation that Moby-Dick enjoyers should take note of: "Horatio's assurance, punning on the maternity and theatrical sense of 'deliver,' reflects the Stoic teaching that speech or reason (logos spermatikos) is the 'generating power and cause of the birth and growth of all living creatures' (Cicero, On the Nature of the Gods, 2.28)." Logos spermatikos...that is what Ahab might be rebelling against. It is crazy; reading Blits' introduction to the new St. Augustine Press version of Hamlet has profited my understanding of Moby-Dick more than most of the secondary books that I've read that focus on MD. Not only the point above, but several others I'll mention later...

In this short story Borges points out that in the 12th book of City of God, St. Augustine says Plato secretly taught the doctrine of eternal return at the Academy.

reading an advance copy of @RamboVanHalen 's "A Capable Man and other Stories", the sequel to "Hollywood Samizdat: Notes From Below the Line", and it's insanely good. The man can WRITE and the stories are amazing.
