Democracy is not a brand. Not a vibe. It’s not a purity quiz you pass by yelling “FIGHT!” into a livestream until your vocal cords give out. One person, one vote is messy coalitions, actual majorities, and the unglamorous work of turning red districts purple and purple districts blue. That’s the job. That’s the only job that matters until we have the numbers. So this sudden romance with a “populist movement” inside the party whose big idea is to replace Hakeem Jeffries with some supposed “fighter”? That’s not strategy. That’s a circular firing squad with better merch. Jeffries is the House Minority Leader. If Democrats take the House, he is in line to be Speaker. First Black Speaker in American history, by the way. You want to primary that guy in a safe Brooklyn seat because he isn’t performing rage for the timeline? Congratulations. You just spent your energy, money, and oxygen making an already-blue district bluer while the other side is redrawing maps and running the country. That’s not fighting. That’s cosplay. I keep hearing the same line: leadership is weak, they don’t fight, we need someone who will punch back. Until you remember what “weak” actually means in a legislature. Weak is not having 218 votes. Weak is not having 60 in the Senate. Weak is the voters staying home last cycle and then acting shocked that the people they left in the minority cannot conjure a majority out of vibes. You don’t get to lose the chamber and then treat the remaining leadership like they’re personally failing you because they cannot pass bills they do not have the votes for. That’s not analysis. That’s fan fiction. Populism, the kind being sold right now, is mostly a mood. “Top versus bottom.” “Eat the rich.” “You’re next.” It feels righteous. It photographs well. It also has a nasty habit of eating its own first. The same energy that just knocked off incumbents in deep-blue New York then pointed at Jeffries and chanted that he’s next. Highest-ranking Black Democrat in the country. A guy who has to hold together a caucus that includes both the most progressive members and the ones who have to win in districts Trump carried. You think the path to a governing majority is threatening that person with a primary because he won’t adopt every maximalist position that polls at 22 percent nationally? That’s not a movement. That’s a circular saw. I’m not a socialist. I’m not a social democrat. I don’t even know what half those labels are supposed to do except let people feel morally taller while the other side writes the laws. Social Security, Medicare, public libraries, fire departments, that’s democratic taxation. The people vote, the government spends. That’s not a revolution. That’s the boring, tested system that actually exists. If your “populism” requires you to treat the people who keep that system from collapsing as the enemy, you’ve confused intra-party therapy with winning. The other side already ran the “just fight, burn it down, the establishment is the problem” playbook. They got a personality cult, a wrecked governing capacity, and a party that can barely keep a Speaker for a full term. You want to copy the form of that while insisting the content is different? Voters can smell the difference between a coalition that can pass infrastructure, chips, a rescue package, and a coalition that spends its primaries proving who is the most authentic tribune of the people. Authenticity doesn’t whip votes. It doesn’t keep the Freedom Caucus equivalent from blowing up your speakership six months in. Democrat pride is not “we’re perfect.” It’s “we built the things that still work and we have a responsibility to keep building them instead of setting fire to the scaffolding because it isn’t pretty enough.” Stop tiptoeing around the record. Stop acting like every compromise is a betrayal.
