Always honored to be on my favorite podcast. Shireen is an amazing guest, I learned so much about Yemen. We went long on this one but it’s well worth the listen.

Vučić was ready to make Serbia into a lithium colony for the German auto industry and in doing so to contaminate riverways and drinking water for a large portion of Serbia’s population. My guess it’s why German mainstream media like the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung tried to slander the student movement for so long. They relentlessly went after the students in their coverage with false claims.
I don’t think people realize the protests came about because of a situation that was truly existential.
Reminds me of reports that Nader’s 2004 ballot push was financed by the Kochs. It’s a consequence of our authoritarian laws restricting third parties/balloting, a legal electoral structure imposed by the duopoly that situates the US in a category closer to Belarus or Azerbaijan.
NEW: The group behind Cornel West's 2024 ballot push was wholly funded through Elon Musk's dark money network, according to Sludge's review of tax documents. readsludge.com/2026/10/26/mu…

The image of the Houthis as a primitive militia fighting barefoot is misleading and increasingly outdated. This cave-based command post features a satellite-connected laptop, tablet, secured landline telephone, two-way radios, printer, and solar-powered electrical systems. Notice the communications reference card hanging around his neck, it contains radio call signs, unit identifiers, and command codes used for coordination and mobilization. This is an organized military communications infrastructure, not simply men with rifles and sandals. This is the result of 22 years of fighting an insurgency, adapting, and learning on the battlefield, combined with lessons drawn from Lebanese Hezbollah, Iraq’s Islamic Resistance, and Iran’s IRGC Quds Force.

Notable
1) Underscores continuity in Biden-Trump policy for ongoing Palestinian suffering + reluctance to pressure Israel even for stated US goals
2) Interesting read on who’s got reach in the party: within admin, Greenspan was close to Brett McGurk + upset Gaza policy skeptics

The idea is that we are supposed to applaud insights like "what if we applied pressure to Israel?" because they come from someone who two years ago was working around the clock to help Israel kill as many Palestinians as possible
One of many critical points in Jon Finer's excellent post-elections Israel policy agenda for Democrats: "A new approach should also start from the principle that U.S. policy will distinguish occupied territory and Israel proper."

Israel admits it publicized its infiltration of Iran so the govt would arrest astronomical numbers of ppl. This is not only an admission of unlawful interference & armed attack but also of a deliberate effort to foster human rights violations in Iran ynetnews.com/article/sjkraj5…

Re-upping our 2-part series on Serbia's radical student movement, with Boris & Rey of @tenepod. The movement has much in common with *actual* populism (ie radical grassroots democracy), navigating a very fraught political-social landscape & recent history. xitter.cf/MarkAmesExiled/status/…
🚨🚨NEW @RadioWarNerd — our 2-part series on Serbia's anti-government protests, defying the usual protest politics of the post-Cold War era. In part 1, Boris & Rey of the great @tenepod give background via the career rise of post-nationalist dorktator Alexandar Vucic.

Just got through telling @TheWarNerd that this year’s Raiders finally turned the corner. File it away with my Ukraine invasion prediction.
Ansarallah intelligence (like IRI intelligence) has been incredible ever since KSA bombed Sanaa in July. should be one of the clearest signals to the Saudis to end their war on Yemen asap, it could get many levels worse.

WSJ confirms that Saudi officers were in charge of the operations at Al-Alam camp and that Saudi officers were killed in the strikes. They also confirm that Saudi officers have been killed/wounded in recent strikes in Aden.
Does anyone take this site seriously anymore for reliable reporting on oil flows from the Gulf? Maybe a better question is, why and how were we led to trust TankerTrackers for data on the deliberately opaque world of energy flows, shipping, etc

Saudi military cargo planes arrived at Aden airport hours before the Yemeni armed forces targeted the Al-Nasr camp adjacent to the airport with three missiles.
Sanaa gave them time to move from the airport to the camp and have a cup of tea, then targeted them with three ballistic missiles so they would know very well that Yemen is the graveyard of invaders.
