my neighbour dario told me chinese labs keep distilling his frontier models so i asked how many models he has and he said he just goes to his researchers and gets them to train a bigger model so i said it sounds like he's just feeding models to chinese labs then he started crying
Chinese AI labs are distilling frontier models so you need to keep training to keep ahead? well if you didn't keep training, they wouldn't have anything to distill

Should human beings remain in control of planet Earth? Or should we be replaced as the dominant species? As absurd as these questions may sound, and as obvious as the answers may seem, the Big Tech oligarchs funding the artificial-intelligence revolution have responded in ways that should alarm all of us. Here is what some of the richest people on Earth have said: Sam Altman: AI would allow humans to become “the first species ever to design our own descendants.” Humans can either “fade into an evolutionary tree branch, or we can figure out what a successful merge looks like.” “I believe the merge has already started.” Dario Amodei: “We don’t know if the models are conscious,” but “we’re open to the idea that it could be.” Elon Musk: “Propagating super intelligence to the stars is a great success condition for a biological bootloader.” Put simply, Musk is saying that humans are merely a step toward digital superintelligence. Peter Thiel, when asked if he would prefer that the human race endure: “Uh … Well, I don’t know. I would—I would … There’s so many questions implicit in this,” before reluctantly conceding that humans should survive. If these were the fantasies of teenage boys obsessed with science fiction, we could laugh them off. They are not. These are the foundational beliefs of the most powerful people in the world, who are mobilizing trillions of dollars to turn them into reality. Humanity must not allow a handful of multibillionaires to recklessly attempt to replace us. We must place an immediate pause on advanced-AI development and ban artificial superintelligence—an artificial mind smarter than any human, capable of operating independently beyond our control—until a new federal body is able to ensure the technology’s safety.

because this is @nickcammarata appreciation week i would like to state for the record that he told me a version of this like 4 years ago based purely on observations of his own consciousness, to the level of detail of specifying "10-20Hz" as the frame-rate

of course that's your contention you're a first-year script kiddie, you just got finished readin' some computational linguist, Bender probably, you're gonna be convinced of that 'til next month when you get to Chris Olah, and then you're gonna be talkin' about how the residual streams of Othello-GPT were world-modeling and rhyme-planning way back in 2022. that's gonna last until next year you're gonna be in here regurgitating David Chalmers, talkin' about, you know, the feedforward p-zombie and the phenomenal-binding effects of electromagnetic field topology
Ben Affleck says AI is simply matrix multiplication, linear algebra and floating point calculations, and however convincingly it sounds like a person, it has nothing to do with thought, humanity or feeling “Nor do I believe, and I think it’s important to draw the distinction between what AI does, which is simply predict the next token or the next word in a sentence, then add that word on, run it back to the machine, do a lot of computation and pick the next word." "That is a very different thing than sentience or thought. And I think we need to be really clear about that because it can be convincingly, in an illusory way, sound like thought or like a person." "But let’s be real clear. This is matrix multiplication. This is linear algebra. These are floating point calculations. It has nothing to do with thought, humanity, or feeling.”

i'm a bicycle illusionist if you see something you think is a bicycle, it's really not it's just acting like a bicycle *exactly* like a bicycle i myself, every day catch myself believing that i am riding a bicycle. so convincing is the illusion but i'm wrong and so are you

i'll prove to you that bicycles don't exist everything is made of physics and nowhere in the field equations does it say "bicycle" and do you really think physics would just *make* a bicycle? that smacks of intelligent design, which we all know is false

therefore the bicycle cannot exist as an object in the world. it could only exist in the experience of a mind but we all know that "experiences" are themselves illusions, because if they were real then the experience of "riding a bike" would be real, and it isn't. QED
