🚨José Mourinho on Bernardo Silva’s incredible impact against Barcelona in El Clásico: 🗣️ José Mourinho: “When we signed Bernardo, we weren’t looking for the quickest player, and we weren’t looking for the strongest player. We wanted an engine in midfield. Someone who would make life uncomfortable for the opposition for 90 minutes. And Bernardo is exactly that. “Do you know why Pep Guardiola had so much success at Manchester City with him?” 🎙️ Reporter: “No, why?” 🗣️ Mourinho: “Because Bernardo is a little harasser! [laughs] He will harass your players until they begin to question why they came to the stadium. You pass the ball, he is there. You turn around, he is there. You think you’ve escaped him, and suddenly he’s pressing you again. The man simply does not stop running! “I remember one morning in training. We were not even supposed to start until 7:15 a.m., and I discovered Bernardo had already been running five kilometres. Five kilometres! I called him over and asked, ‘Bernardo, do you ever stop running? What exactly are you running away from?’ “He looked at me and said, ‘It’s my favourite thing to do, boss.’ “I said to myself, this boy is either completely crazy or exactly the player I need! [laughs] “Against Barcelona, we needed somebody who would disturb their rhythm, close their passing lanes, chase their midfielders and make sure they never felt comfortable on the ball. Bernardo understood the assignment perfectly. He didn’t need me shouting every five minutes because he already knew what I wanted. “Barcelona want to play through the midfield. They want time to turn, look up and find their next pass. Bernardo doesn’t give you that luxury. He makes you rush your decisions, and when you rush your decisions against a team like ours, you make mistakes. “That is why we signed Bernardo Silva and not Rodri. Rodri gives you control in his own way, but Bernardo gives you a different kind of problem. He makes your midfield work twice as hard just to breathe. Tonight, Barcelona didn’t just lose the ball; they lost the peace of mind they need to play their football. And Bernardo was a big reason why.”

What a comeback. We will need time to properly understand it. But I think this was a 20th century politician who, at the very last possible moment, figured out how to run a 21st century campaign. After his first round loss, Lula started carrying a smartphone for the first time in his life, brought in younger aides who knew how to run a real digital operation, and finally was able to create some excitement in one of the world’s most terminally online countries. The net result was 3 million more people who turned out to vote, fewer spoiled ballots, votes from third-party candidates, and some repented bolsonaristas as well. Flávio Bolsonaro challenged the results, but he faces an extremely difficult battle. The margin of victory, more than 4 million votes, was too large to be explained by the delay in polling stations closing or any other abnormalities. Big Brazilian power brokers, including the so-called Centrão, are dutifully accepting the result. The Bolsonaros will ask the White House for support, but it’s important that the vast majority of Latin American leaders, including those on the right like Keiko Fujimori and José Antonio Kast, quickly recognized Lula’s victory. They concluded this is over, and the Trump administration may do the same. For Lula, the good news is that he won, and the bad news is that he won. He ran up a big bill to help make this happen: More than $60 billion in extra spending, welfare payments, debt forgiveness and other fiscal largesse. This in a country with real interest rates above 8% and a debt burden forecast to reach 83% of GDP this year, up a whopping 12 percentage points in Lula’s term. Markets are hemorrhaging in the hours after his victory, and they may get worse until Lula details his plans to cut spending. Lula also faces the most conservative Congress on record, a skeptical business community, and consumers who are struggling under huge debts as well. But look, Lula would rather deal with those problems than the alternative. He will be the man who defined an entire half-century of Brazilian history, from the metalworkers’ strike he led as a labor union leader in 1979 to the end of his fourth term in 2030. A truly epic story that is still being written, and may yet bring more surprises. -- For more, including reactions from @DaniCamp0 and Alessandra Ribeiro: americasquarterly.org/articl…

How did Lula manage to win in Brazil yesterday? 1. The most important reason – voter turnout. An exceptionally high turnout rate of nearly 81%. The leftist bloc simply made a greater effort to get their voters to the polls, particularly in the northeast of the country. Bolsonaro’s team assumed they had already won, as most polls and media outlets had predicted. They became complacent, and in the south—Brazil’s right-wing heartland—the turnout rate was lower than in the north. 2. Voters dependent on government programs. Lula’s success over the years has consistently stemmed from the rollout of an increasing number of government programs. Some estimates suggest that as many as 94 million people in Brazil rely on state welfare and pensions. These voters know that a right-wing government, in an effort to restore fiscal order (as seen in Argentina), would cut back on such programs. These groups—poorer individuals, the elderly, etc.—turned out to vote in very large numbers yesterday. 3. An aging population. Over the past 15 years, the percentage of the population over the age of 60 has increased by more than 70%. Older voters tend to vote in large numbers for leftist candidates (like Lula) to ensure that generous government programs remain in place. We see a similar trend in European countries, for instance, where older people also fear that right-wing parties and leaders might raise the retirement age or reduce pension benefits. 4. After more than a decade of the "Bolsonaro effect" in Brazil, many voters have been alienated by the persistent political strife involving the Bolsonaro family. While the right-wing Liberal Party gained 22 seats in Congress, Bolsonaro lost the election by more than 4 million votes. Brazil needs a fresh, new right-wing leader—one untainted by controversy, corruption, or ongoing disputes regarding election results. 5. The Supreme Court’s controversial decision to extend the operating hours of polling stations likely contributed to Lula’s victory. In working-class areas, in particular, there were very long queues of people waiting to vote. However, this alone cannot account for the victory. 6. Severe weather across large parts of southern Brazil also led some Bolsonaro supporters—who likely assumed their candidate would win regardless—to stay home. Yet, this, too, is not a sufficient explanation for the defeat. Although Brazil is the world’s 10th-largest economy and one of the most significant export economies in the Western Hemisphere, its national debt—approaching 85%—and its 10% budget deficit are unsustainable. The country is heading toward a fiscal crisis, a situation largely brought about by Lula’s left-wing policies. However, in a nation where nearly 100 million people depend on government handouts, the primary reason for Lula’s victory lies in his generous, unfunded promises of ever-increasing state largesse. At some point, however, the country will face a deep crisis, and then a Milei-like candidate—chainsaw in hand—will likely seek to rescue a desperate nation. Ultimately, Bolsonaro’s campaign during the final two weeks was not convincing enough. He rested on his laurels. His defeat can be attributed primarily to his own mistakes.
