Analysis⬇️ Keldon Johnson gets a prime matchup and situation for success tonight against the Kings. We know Sacramento is a terrible team that doesn't play any defense. Last season SAC ranked 28th in defensive rating and allowed the 8th most paint ppg along with the 6th most transition ppg. This plays well into Keldon's skillset, he is looking to use his size driving to the rim. Last year Johnson scored 65% of his total made FG's in the paint and 21% of his production came in transition. So far early this year the Kings have remained bad, they rank 27th in defensive rating and allow 124 ppg which is 3rd highest in NBA. SAC also notably give up the for the 3rd most rebounds while playing at the 8th fastest pace. Getting alot of possession against a terrible defense is an ideal spot. While the spread favors the Spurs by 18.5 pts, this should not affect Keldon much at all coming off the bench. In fact given his rotations, playing the ends of 1st and 3rd qtrs and start of 2nd and 4th qtrs, it's likely he plays those stints regardless. The key here is in a big Spurs win, that would limit the starters minutes and Keldon may see more time with a higher usage with bench unit. These game scripts are always more favorable for bench players and Keldon has thrived in similar situations. This year he saw 19 and 20 mins in the 2 losses, but got 26 minutes in the 16 point win. Last year in regular season with 18-28 mins, Keldon was over this line in 73.4% of games and avg 18.5 PR. Some thoughts on today's NBA games 🏀 CLE vs PHI: - Cavs in preseason were running Harden+Mobley the same stints and Mitchell+Allen the same stints - If Jarrett Allen plays, expect Mobley to be roaming off of LeBron as a help defender - If Allen sits out, Tyson and Hezonja get boosts off the bench - Thomas Bryant would also be needed for mins for size to defend Embiid 76ers - Joel was used more as a facilitator in game 1 as a dribble handoff hub (12 potential asts) - Maxey led the team with 91 touches - Nick Nurse seems set on his usual tight rotations playing his guys big mins, at least until Dean Wade gets healthy - VJ Edgecombe will continue to see opponents worst perimeter defenders (Harden/Merrill) - Cavs were a catch & shoot funnel defense last season DEN vs OKC: - Thunder will make it difficult on Jokic and Murray in any way they can, sending help and forcing the ball to role players - Gordon and Braun will have to step up, OKC funnels usage to secondary players and those are typically the level of shooters they are comfortable leaving somewhat open - OKC allowed 4th most spot up ppg, 3rd most catch & shoot, 7th most 3-PTA last year - Gordon has dominated Chet in most prior matchups using his strength and physicality advantage in the paint and on the glass - Coach Adelman mentioned letting Gordon initiate the offense if Chet guards him - Nuggets ran Jokic+Murray together same stints in preseason, they trust Demar to run 2nd unit. - Keep an eye on Trevon Brazile, he's been turning heads in preseason as super athletic forward On the Thunder side: - SGA was notably playing off ball more than usual which was by design - In the opener vs SA, Shai had 33 passes which was less than JDub and Ajay. - Worth noting, in past H2H matchups last year SGA avg 12.3 asts on 52.33 passes vs DEN - JDub looked back and fully healthy in preseason but had an off shooting game in the opener, I expect him to continue to be aggressive - Ajay Mitchell also in a better spot to bounce back vs a worse point of attack/PnR defense of DEN - Hartenstein got in major foul trouble vs Wemby, also a risk here vs Jokic but OKC has Aday Mara to throw at him too.
