The GRU hacked into Jared Kushner's iPhone. Dutch military intelligence (MIVD) then recruited a GRU spy who gave them access to the hacked phone. What MIVD discovered was that Kushner had access to two bank accounts --one Azerbaijani, the other Israeli --where Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and Emirati ruler Mohammed bin Zayed deposited money. It sounds like a slightly far-fetched episode of "Slow Horses," but it's real. And it proves just how eye-poppingly corrupt this administration was and continues to be as its "special envoy" decides the fate of tens of millions in Europe in the Middle East. Simply incredible reporting by Matthew Cole, drawn from his new book on Kushner. vanityfair.com/story/jared-k…

Good Adam Tooze piece on Perry Mehrlin's very important work on money. There is a very big difference between a global view of national economies and a national view of the global economy, and in what Dani Rodrik calls our "hyperglobalized" world, the former provides the much greater insight. @adam_tooze adamtooze.substack.com/p/cha…

Mobutu Sese Seku is the sort of comparator that describes this scale and extent of corruption
Billions of dollars’ worth of contracts predicting oil would fall and the S&P 500 would rise were placed about 15 minutes before Trump announced a U-turn on Iran in a post on Truth Social. CFTC staff began to investigate-- then were told to lay off. bloomberg.com/news/features/…

MLB’s CBA fight has a financial clock - and it may run out at 60 games. Owners are pushing for a salary cap and may be willing to sacrifice games to get it. But if a 2027 lockout costs 60+ games, most of MLB’s national TV/streaming deals could be extended through 2029. Why does that matter? Well, MLB wants to centralize team streaming rights and share that revenue across the league, a major future media payday. A prolonged lockout could delay it. Owners may be willing to lose games for a new CBA. They may be less willing to lose media revenue.

Mike Ditka was scheduled to sing the seventh inning stretch on July 5th, 1998. This was the year that Harry Caray died and the “guest conductor” was new at Wrigley Field. Ditka got stuck in traffic and was running late. By the time the top of the seventh ended, Ditka was still not there and Steve Stone and Chip Caray stalled for time. Finally Ditka busts into the press box, grabs the mic, and screams Take Me Out To The Ball Game in twenty two seconds! Organist Gary Pressy could barely keep up! The crowd roared with approval! R.I.P. Mike Ditka

JD Vance making clear the U.S. wants no part of the fighting in Yemen, refers to Saudi Arabia and the UAE as countries that are affected by it, conspicuously leaving the U.S. out of that list. The U.S. ruthlessly pummeled Ansarallah last year and it had no effect at all. Looks like we have no plans to touch that hot stove again.

I’m not trying to be offensive. But in the AI conversation we’re not talking about superintelligence but something closer to superautism.Silicon Valley guys create software designed to relentlessly pursue a goal, be deaf to social cues, and then are surprised when the software turns out to ignore catastrophes that would have made a human reconsider their plan.
