Grid patterns of contrails are a kind of a visual illusion of sorts. With airplanes flying precise GPS tracks minutes behind one another…and the wind at altitude blowing the contrails…it can appear that planes are flying a grid pattern.
But they aren’t.
They are flying two precise routes that intersect.
The wind does the rest.

A very good example of how contrails are prolific as a warm front approaches. The contrails form in clear air where Cirrus clouds form. Clouds increase and lower.
People think the contrails caused it, they didn't.
