The battleship USS Alabama (BB-60) under construction at the Norfolk Navy Yard on 3 July 1942. At the time of this photo, Alabama was nearing completion, with commissioning on 16 August 1942. The photo particularly highlights her forward turrets. The number 1 turret still lacks its faceplate; what is more noteworthy is that the backing plate is missing. During construction, the turret interiors of United States Battleships were sheathed with plates of Special Treatment Steel (STS). These STS plates served as backing to the actual armor plates that were then attached to them. Unlike structural steel, STS had protective qualities and actually contributed to the overall armor of the turret. STS steel was similar to homogeneous Class B armor used by the US Navy (As opposed to face-hardened Class A armor). In addition to its protective qualities, STS steel was also elastic and resisted tearing. This made it very effective as a backing plate, as it helped contain spalling, shrapnel, and shell fragments. When listing the armor of the South Dakota class battleships, some publications list the 18" (457mm) of armor on the turret faceplate only. However, this ignores the protection afforded by the backing plate underneath. The faceplates of the South Dakota class were actually 20.5" (521mm) thick due to the STS steel. Factoring in the STS plate, the true armor thickness of the South Dakota class turrets would look like this: Turret Front: 18" (457mm) Class B armor + 2.5" (64mm) STS Turret Sides: 9.5" (241mm) Class A armor + .75" (19mm) STS Turret Rear: 12"(305mm) Class A armor + .75" (19mm) STS Turret Roof: 7.25" (184mm) Class A armor + .75" (19mm) STS Now back to Alabama In the photo, Alabama is missing her STS backing plate on the turret front. Like her sisters, Alabama utilized STS backing plates on the turret sides, rear, and roof. However, her turret faceplates were completely different in that they did not use STS backing. Alabama experimented with single plates of armor for the turret faceplates. Rather than combine Class B and STS, Alabama simply utilized a thicker slab of Class B armor, using a single plate that was just shy of 19" (483mm) in thickness. Presumably, this was done because a single plate of homogeneous Class B should be of equal effectiveness to two plates of homogeneous Class B and STS, even if the two plates had a combined thickness that was slightly greater. The equality in protection would be benefited by simpler construction and a slight savings in weight. Alabama was the only member of her class to experiment with this style of faceplates. However, it seems that the potential advantages never materialized as the system was not repeated in subsequent designs. The Iowa class returned to mounting Class B armor over STS for the front of its turrets. The Montana class also used Class B and STS backing, though with far greater thicknesses.

What bothers me so much about this, even more than the immediate, ruinous impact on the rental sector, is what it does to civil society. If you design a system that encourages people to take the piss, people who’d never otherwise have thought to do so will also have to start doing so or risk feeling like mugs. You already see this in the benefits system, where even genuine claimants are encouraged to lie and exaggerate. And this habit, once formed, doesn’t just limit itself to interactions with faceless institutions. It spills over into all dealings in the public sphere, and an underlying level of suspicion builds up between strangers. Forebodes a very bleak future as people revert to informal institutions and additional costs are layered into every transaction as “fair play” can no longer be relied on.
Six months in and the tribunal system is already gumming up. There’s basically zero reason not to challenge any rent increase (apart from a lingering reluctance to take the piss), and as more tenants cotton on, practically the entire rental market in England will grind to a halt.

You must remember that all philosophy is a confession. People become obsessed with stoicism because they are naturally neurotic. That doesn’t mean stoicism can’t help you. If you are neurotic, it will help you a lot. Marcus Aurelius was neurotic. But it does mean you need to update your mental model of “this stoic guru will be stoic” to “this stoic guru will be neurotic.” Thinking the DailyStoic guy must be mentally stable is like thinking someone on anti-depressants must not be depressed.
That face you make when you read the Meditations of Marcus Aurelius 195 times and build an entire career off promoting stoic philosophy but still don't know what it means or how to apply it to your own life. This is modern intellectualism in a nutshell. All knowledge, no wisdom. Virtue signalling without virtue.

please read this piece, it was so good. it’s about dei officers in the federal government being cleaned out and many being unable to find new jobs because they were put on “dei watchlists” that come up in google searches in the exact same way it did for right wingers who had their lives ruined by journalists. then he starts applying for dei jobs in the private sector but can’t get one because no one wants to hire someone with dei shit all over their resume. then they find a conservative activist and ask him if he’s happy with all of this and his response is “these people are all anti-white, of course I’m glad they can’t find jobs.” washingtonpost.com/nation/20…

“Clarity”? Happy to translate. Don’t screw American workers. Don’t use visa programs as a back door into our nation. We were clear. You were hoping we were kidding. We’re not.
LEAKED: MICROSOFT'S CLOUD + AI CHIEF TELLS EMPLOYEES "WE WANT TO BRING MORE TALENT INTO THE UNITED STATES." That is Scott Guthrie in his division's internal AMA, two days after Microsoft offered buyouts to about 60,000 employees and a week after the US Gov’t suspended their PERM filings. He told visa and green card holders Microsoft will "continue to sponsor" them. He said Microsoft is "working with the US administration to get clarity," and "we're not sure that everyone's looked at the right data."
