The more Europe depends on neighboring states to control migration, the more leverage they have over Europe, points out @anapalacio. Morocco is well aware of this. bit.ly/4wWA9eN

Days after ousting Nicolás Maduro, President Trump said: “We want stability, but we do want democracy.” "Now he seems only to want oil," CFR expert Elliott Abrams writes for @PostOpinions. Trump announced via Truth Social that the U.S. has secured “more than 65 billion barrels of proven oil reserves in Venezuela" in an agreement under which the U.S. will get a 35% equity stake in a private Venezuelan company, as well as the rights to at least 20% of its output for 100 years. "Washington isn’t paying for either, and the Venezuelan people didn’t agree to it," Abrams writes. "The deal will fail if democracy ever returns to Venezuela, because the great majority of the people will be against it." washingtonpost.com/opinions/…

Three of the largest militaries in the Muslim world now under a single security umbrella. Turkish defence industry, Pakistani strategic depth, Saudi financial weight. The Mecca pact says less about Iran than about Riyadh is no longer betting on the US umbrella alone.
