The reason some people consider certain actions from Ukraine ‘evil’ is because this is the first time they have seen what a war is actually like for the weaker power. “Ukraine is conscripting young men.” Yeah, their country was invaded by a hostile great power, what are they supposed to do, not have a standing army? “Zelenskyy isn’t holding elections.” The country is in the middle of an existential war and millions of Ukrainians aren’t even in the country, this is the whole point of martial law existing. “Ukraine is restricting Orthodox Christians.” Ukraine restricted a particular denomination of Orthodox Christianity that has direct ties to the enemy they are fighting against. “Ukraine is targeting Russian infrastructure” Damaging enemy infrastructure to halt their attacking capabilities is war 101, this is not something unique to Ukraine. This is all very normal stuff in war.

This is impressive because a) It’s not a ‘typical Dem’ answer b) The praise makes the criticisms more devastating

Why the War Was the West's Fault — and Why Mearsheimer Is 100% Wrong I'm always puzzled by people who profess to be huge fans of Mearsheimer because of the supposed depth and strength of his theory of Realism, and who seem totally unaware that his own theory shows that his takes on the war in Ukraine are wrong. Start with the word that frames his entire position. His 2014 essay in Foreign Affairs was titled "Why the Ukraine Crisis Is the West's Fault," and everything he has said since repeats that verdict: the West provoked Russia by expanding NATO, so the West is to blame for the war. But fault is not a category in Realism. The theory is about incentives and constraints, not blame. If we translate "fault" into something the theory can work with, namely the key cause that made the war happen, then his own theory assigns it to the opposite of what he asserts. The West didn't cause the war by threatening Russia. It caused it by failing to make aggression costly. 1/5

What is actually going on is there’s a huge difference between the shit you say and reality. ‘The people’ in Ukraine are soldiers I meet every day who volunteered to fight to save their nation from an imperialist takeover. Those same people you claim to speak for actually tell me you are putting their lives at risk by shutting off starlink.

Of all the many evil betrayals I’ve seen in the last 60 years I’ve been alive, I’m struggling to think of any that match what Trump and Musk did to innocent Ukrainian citizens while Putin was sending missiles this way. A trio to live on in infamy well after I am gone

Absolutely the dumbest period of time in human history. Haiving an unprecedentedly vast wealth of knowledge right at your fingertips, with unprecedentedly easy and instant access to answers to almost any question, something even our recent ancestors could never have dreamed of, having unimaginable resources and unheard-of means of distinguishing truth from lie -- and yet being this nihilistically delusional and morally bankrupt on a matter as elementary as 2+2=4.

When Ukraine destroys Russian data centers, hoards of aggressive right-wing bots disappear, and Twitter becomes much friendlier. Isn’t that interesting? So much of our politics is driven by the internet, and so much of the internet is driven by Russians who want to hurt us. Shouldn’t we do something about that, given that we know it?

Putin says he'll talk if Ukraine becomes "neutral." Ukraine was neutral in 2014. Non-aligned by law. Russia took Crimea anyway. "Neutral" is just Russian for "undefended."

Seriously President, why list these events, all of which happened today and then conclude with: "Russia will find our resolve only growing stronger. We are reinforcing our collective deterrence and defence, together with NATO. And we are stepping up the pressure on Russia." These are not commensurate statements. No policy whatsoever follows from today's incidents, each of which are tantamount to war, most of them could have led to the death of European citizens. Spouting more standard European clichés, Russia will "find" nothing about our "resolve growing stronger". Resolve is not a response. These are not "reckless" acts, they are purposive. "Reckless" is doing something accidentally. "Reinforcing collective defence" just says only "We will improve our efforts to shoot down the drones you send into Europe". NOT, alas, "the following are the consequences your brazen attacks". Policy and action, not boilerplate. If I sat in the Kremlin I would be falling out of my chair laughing at what wimps Europeans are, take another swig of vodka, and yell out, "Petya, send another couple of drones to Poland", and turn around (sternly), "Sasha, how come that train derailment today didn't have any casualties?"
Once again, Europe woke up to reckless and dangerous Russian behaviour. A Russian warship fired emergency flares dangerously close to a Danish helicopter. A drone entered Lithuanian airspace before being destroyed by NATO fighter jets. These are not isolated incidents. They are part of a broader pattern of Russian aggression and provocation against Europe, testing our readiness and our resolve. Russia will find our resolve only growing stronger. We are reinforcing our collective deterrence and defence, together with NATO. And we are stepping up the pressure on Russia.

Damn that sucks, dudes. Hey here's a thought. The guys that are trying to make you do this gave you guns, live ammo, and grenades. Can you think of a possible alternative to getting shredded by drones?
In a video farewell, fifteen Russian soldiers, preparing to be sent into a final one-way meat assault, declare: “The Russian people are being killed here.” Their unit having already lost between 1,000 and 1,200 men, demanding criminal charges against the commanders and senior leadership who sent them to die.

The question isn't why Putin continues the war. It's why he can't end it. End it, and a million armed men with combat trauma and broken promises come home to ask what it was for. End it, and the war economy — the only growth engine left — shuts off, taking the salaries of every region that now lives on coffin payments and shell quotas. End it, and the blame question opens: who lost the fleet, the gas market, the 19 NATO-to-32 map, the million men? Wars of choice become wars of survival — not for the country, for the regime. Putin isn't fighting Ukraine anymore. He's fighting the peace, because the peace is the only front where he loses personally.

Unpopular opinion: The Western "Left vs. Right" spectrum is completely inapplicable to post-colonial nations like Ukraine. In the West, political ideology sits on a grid of economic policy and culture wars. In Ukraine, the only axis that matters is sovereignty vs. subjugation. Labels like "Right" or "Left" fail here because defensive anti-colonial liberation (reclaiming language, identity, and statehood) isn't "right-wing conservatism." It's the baseline precondition for existence. Meanwhile, old "leftist" structures here were simply vehicles for Soviet imperial control. Trying to force Ukraine into Western political boxes turns basic self-preservation into an "ideology." We don't fit the spectrum because the spectrum wasn't built for nations fighting to exist.

My issue with the Fermi Paradox is the assumption that intelligence is a natural by-product of evolution. Dinosaurs were in charge for about 500 times longer than we have been, but never got around to inventing the radio. Our love for tech might make us the galactic weirdos.

This is why victory for Ukraine is victory for *so many other* nations colonized by Moscow—including those still in the Russian Federation. The same way that Irish or Indian independence aided other British colonies, or Algerian independence aided other French colonies.

The West humiliated Russia in the 1990s. This war is the consequence.’ I’ve heard this in every language, from every podium. It is history rewritten backwards. Recall what actually happened to defeated Russia: no occupation. No reparations. No tribunal. It kept its nuclear arsenal and its UN veto. Its debts were forgiven and refinanced. It was handed IMF billions and a seat at the G8 — a club of democracies admitting a wounded autocracy out of hope. Now recall an actually humiliated nation: Germany, 1945. Occupied. Partitioned. Cities in ash, leaders hanged, guilt taught to its children by law. Germany became the most peaceful democracy in Europe. Russia became this. So spare me the humiliation theory. Russia was not humiliated after the Cold War. It was indulged — and it read every kindness as weakness, every gift as tribute. The grievance was never mistreatment. The grievance was lost dominion. Empires do not mourn their wounds. They mourn their slaves.
