With motorway toll rises in the news today, reposting a piece @mu_lynch and I wrote a few weeks ago arguing we need to fundamentally reform the way we tax driving (including tolls).

The nonsense we put up with, just to allow a tiny number of people to drive through the city centre. Just remove private cars, and you can get the whole lot done for a tiny fraction of this cost.

Interesting that the SI enabling the trial of zebra crossings w/o Belisha beacons say that a sign *may* be used. My interpretation is that if the zebra lines on the road exist |=| then it is a valid zebra crossing in law, even without Belishas or a sign. irishstatutebook.ie/eli/2022…

Or ask the council to grit the footpaths so that people can safely walk outside instead of insisting that the council grit everywhere cars go while advising the elderly to stay inside.
⚠️Take care on icy footpaths❄
I have asked @dlrcc to commence gritting of all secondary Rds & housing estates in the county urgently.
Advisable for the elderly to stay indoors as much as is possible until the ice has cleared. Make sure to look out for your elderly neighbours!

Delighted to hear Min. Ryan’s support for transforming the Leinster House car park to a public green space, an extension of the national gallery. What a positive signal this would give to the public on climate leadership from politicians. I hope for strong cross party support.
NEWS: Green Party Leader @EamonRyan has told #TonightVMTV he is in favour of getting rid of the car park for politicians at Leinster House.

A policy that seeks to increase economic ties with China, and therefore dependence on that country, is a strategic error in my view.
Spoke to Irish foreign minister Simon Coveney about China:
He said China is too big a market to ignore and Ireland will look to expand trade & investment where possible

There are two ways to respond to this decision, handwringing about a failed roads project, or seeing it as an opportunity to create Ireland’s most sustainable and well managed city. I’m in the latter camp. So let’s do it @EamonRyan @GalwayCityCo @1Hildegarde @TFIupdates – at Galway, Ireland

Catholics now outnumber Protestants in Northern Ireland, a country whose boundaries were drawn in 1921 to ensure a hefty Protestant majority - but both are now minorities. Results (including 'religion brought up in') of last year's census: NI is 45.7% Catholic, 43.5% Protestant.

Two days ago the NYT posted an investigation into politicians trading stocks
They found that 81 Democrats & 101 Republicans filed up to 3,700 trades and $100M in possible volume
Many had 100% winners, with some perfectly timed
Here’s examples of just how good they were

How can they justify building this kind of car-dominant housing this close to good public transport in 2022? And why are the Ballyfermot-Drimnagh councillors not calling it out?
I'm struggling to understand why @DubCityCouncil wants to build low density, car centric housing 800m from a train station, adjacent to the BusConnects G spine?
The Cherry Orchard affordable housing site is also a 30 minute bike ride to O'Connell bridge.
