Profound appreciation to Governor Gavin Newsom who courageously commuted the sentences of all 548 prisoners on death row in California.
My father was murdered in California and when his assailant was sentenced to death, his brother, Senator Edward Kennedy, on behalf of our family, asked that the murderer's life be spared. He was right then, and Gavin Newsom is right today.
It may be politically expedient to support the death penalty, but it is always morally repugnant.
Let's remember the words of Robert Kennedy on April 5, 1968:
"Whenever any American's life is taken by another American unnecessarily - whether it is done in the name of the law or in the defiance of law, by one man or a gang, in cold blood or in passion, in an attack of violence or in response to violence - whenever we tear at the fabric of life which another man has painfully and clumsily woven for himself and his children, the whole nation is degraded."

I've talked about this before but I never understood the worldview of passionate death penalty supporters.
I get the intellectual case for capital punishment even if I disagree with it.
But they really think people who want to not kill fellow human beings are "moral cowards".
