Rosemary Nankabirwa made history as one of the first female news anchors at NTV Uganda, helping establish women’s presence at the forefront of prime-time television news before her career was cut short by cancer at the age of 37. Nankabirwa joined NTV in 2006, shortly after the station’s launch, and became one of its recognisable faces, co-anchoring the flagship News at 9 bulletin, often alongside Maurice Mugisha. She also presented Money Matters, a weekly business programme. Before joining NTV, she worked at WBS Television, where she anchored lunchtime and prime-time news, presented a breakfast show and worked as an editor. She began her broadcasting career in radio, working with Radio Waumini in Nairobi and Kampala FM. Remembered for her confidence, professionalism and engaging presentation, Nankabirwa left NTV in 2011 to pursue a Master’s degree in Journalism and Communication at the University of London. In late 2014, she was diagnosed with advanced adrenocortical carcinoma, a rare cancer of the adrenal gland. Despite surgery and chemotherapy, her condition deteriorated. A public fundraising campaign raised more than Shs100 million towards specialised treatment in Nairobi. She died on April 12, 2015, aged 37, leaving a lasting mark on Uganda’s television journalism.
