As seen this week in a state with a bottle deposit tax. Curbside recycling in Washington is affordable and convenient - why would #waleg adopt a new tax on common grocery items to make recycling more difficult?

"It is a wonderful generator of revenue for us as a business," said a business representative supporting a 10-cent tax on all bottles in our state. We oppose a new bottle deposit tax because it makes common grocery items more expensive and we already have curbside recycling for bottles #waleg tvw.org/video/house-appropri…

"Opponents of the legislation...said the proposal would come at the wrong time, amid record inflation and higher grocery bills, and that the fee would raise the price of everyday items. Opposition groups describe the charge as regressive, claiming it could increase the cost of common purchases, such as bulk water bottles, by nearly 50%. They also raised concerns that bottle producers would retain unclaimed deposits." @KING5Seattle reports #waleg king5.com/article/news/polit…

🚨BAD BILL ALERT🚨 This Wednesday at 4:00 p.m. the House Appropriations Committee will hold a public hearing on HB 1607, also known as the bottle tax, which would impose a 10 cent tax per container. The bill would also require beverage producers to pay more than $200 million per year in fees for a new bottle recycling program, which will be passed on to consumers in the form of higher prices. 🔗👇

"Today, our state is in the midst of a multi-year process to implement a significant overhaul of policies and regulations that will change the fundamentals of our recycling and organics system. We must focus on implementing these new laws while warding off higher costs to consumers and other disruptions to our system." #waleg @EverettHerald heraldnet.com/opinion/commen…
