Amy Winehouse was only 23 when Back to Black came out, and you could hear how deep her musical knowledge ran. The ’60s girl-group influences, Motown, doo-wop, her jazz phrasing… and somehow she made it all sound unmistakably like her. What an incredible musical mind.

They couldn’t decide who they wanted Olivia to be and that’s part of why her debut fell flat - and it’s not bad work at all. They gave her Aaliyah’s 1997-1999 aesthetic. A Toya discard with “Bizounce”. And Samantha Mumba’s sauce. Boom. I wish she would have given more on LHHNY. Two major label deals falling thru: VH1 giving you a platform is not to be fumbled. Rich Dollaz also didn’t help things. A terrible manager.
