Both Sam Altman (OpenAI) and Dario Amodei (Anthropic) have made some version of the argument that AI will give us the power to "fix the climate". I find this a deeply problematic position, as the challenges of mitigation are as much political as technological.

My book is published today in the US 🇺🇸
Published in the UK (& elsewhere) on 11th.
It looks at 7 of our big environmental problems & how to solve them.
These problems are massive. Urgent. But solvable. It's a critical decade for us to take action.

Calls for more climate finance are important, but if current practice is any guide, a large share of the funds will be taken from budgets that fund critical development priorities, @vijramachandran and @alexjmssmith write. foreignpolicy.com/2023/12/01…

On Monday, I gave a talk at the Oxford Martin School on the future of global development. Bottom line: it used to be about moving machines to workers, in the future it will be about moving workers to clients... Here's a text with pictures.

And we wonder why official policy posture regarding Africa's energy needs is often ridiculous.

A good example 👇🏽 why:
✔️ loans aren’t grants but still can be very useful
✔️debt transparency is essential
South Africa has released the terms of two €300 million climate loans from France and Germany. Both 20 years & 5 year grace period. The French loan is 3.6%, the German 3%. In comparison, South Africa's 2044 $ Eurobond is currently yielding 8.6%

Unfortunately, I won my bet with @TedNordhaus.
The world lost.
Fossil CO2 emissions broke a new record in 2021, with 2022 on track to have an even higher emission rate.

Have we reached peak CO2 emissions yet?
@TedNordhaus is betting 'yes'.
I am betting 'no', betting that we will see higher emissions within the next decade.
$2000 is on the line. I hope Ted wins.

My take:
@KatieAuth and @MutisoRose have the right approach
BUT @toddjmoss and @vijramachandran approach probably gets you 80% of the way there and avoids 90% of bureaucratic complication
So…. Tie? 😅
We love healthy debate @energyforgrowth, so here's @KatieAuth & @MutisoRose VS @vijramachandran & me on gas financing for the poor. The issue is 🔥🔥🔥, but we think calm pragmatic solutions are best. medium.com/energy-for-growth…
