In my meeting with Prof. @NNdjeka, 🇿🇦National TB Programme Manager, I highlighted South Africa’s leadership in TB research – including the TB PRACTECAL trial that led to @WHO’s 6-month all-oral drug-resistant TB (DR-TB) regimen – now saving lives worldwide.
South Africa’s experience with DR-TB and TB/HIV co-infection is highly relevant for the European Region as we face rising DR-TB linked to conflict & migration.
We also explored stronger interregional cooperation through TB-Free Central Asia, BRICS+ health work, and joint research on vaccines & diagnostics.

CT We need to work together to ensure TB prioritisation during the Covid-19 response to ensure we sustain the gains and prevent an increase in TB deaths. #TBproof
CT: Global Fund is placing a lot of resources at our disposal. We need to enhance planning and utilization of these resources in order to improve treatment outcomes among TB, DR-TB, and Covid-19 patients. #TBProof
T5 There are community health care workers at PHC facilities. Their scope of work and training vary from place to place. I think we need to do more for these colleagues who are doing a lot with limited resources #TBProof
T4 We need to provide a good variety of tests, not just PCR to be done on nasopharyngeal sample but also effective nasal antigen tests and we also need to scale up Xpert Covid-19 cartridges. These may be used using current TB GeneXpert machines. Ongoing training of HCWs #TBProof
