A few months ago, I wrote this about .ai domains đ
"Everyone's buying .ai domains like it's 1999. Auctions exploding. Startups rebranding. Projects don't even do AI but still go .ai 'just in case.' But what if it's just another bubble?"
I compared it to NFTs, to the .io craze, to the .com boom itself.
I said the hype would fade. That .ai would become just another extension in the dropdown menu. That the serious projects would eventually switch to .com for trust.
That was months ago. Now I'm genuinely wondering: was I wrong? đ€
Because here's what I'm seeing:
The AI wave isn't slowing down, it's accelerating. Every week, another major announcement. Another billion-dollar round. Another company pivoting to "AI-first."
Some .ai domains that sold for $500 are now going for $15k+. Premium ones are hitting six figures.
Even legacy brands are quietly scooping up their .ai equivalents. Not to use them. Just to protect them.
And the thing is... AI isn't going away like NFTs did. It's not a collectible trend. It's infrastructure. It's becoming the new electricity. âĄ
So maybe I was too early with the bubble call?
Here are some signs that could suggest I got it wrong:
â AI adoption is still accelerating, not plateauing
â Major enterprises are standardizing on .ai for their AI divisions
â The "cringe factor" hasn't kicked in yet, .ai still feels fresh, not dated
â Unlike .io or .xyz, .ai has a clear semantic meaning that actually matters
â Even Google and Microsoft are treating AI as a decade-long bet, not a quarter-long trend
Or maybe I was right, and we're just still in the "music playing" phase? đ”
The thing about bubbles is, you never know you're in one until it pops.
I'm genuinely perplexed. I still believe in long-term fundamentals. I still think .com has gravity.
But I'm also wondering if .ai might be the exception.
The one TLD that actually sticks because the underlying tech isn't going anywhere.
What do you think? Did I call it too early? Or is the pop still coming? đ
Everyoneâs buying .ai domains like itâs 1999 đ„
đž Auctions exploding.
đ Startups rebranding.
đ€Ș Projects donât even do AI but still go .ai âjust in caseâ.
It looks like the future.
But what if itâs just another bubble?
𧔠Hereâs what no one tells you đ
You launch something? .ai
You start a side project? .ai
You donât even do AI? Still .ai just in case đ€
Yes, AI is massive. Yes, itâs shaping the future.
There are billions even trillions being spent into the field by the biggest tech players in the world. This isnât small.
But make no mistake: this is a hype wave.
Just like NFTs in 2021.
Just like .io in the startup era.
Just like the .com boom itself.
People are rushing into .ai not always because it makes sense, but because itâs the cool thing to do. It signals youâre part of the moment, youâre âinâ. Until the moment passes.
But letâs be honest:
The ones making real money here arenât founders.
Theyâre the registrars.
Namecheap, GoDaddy, DynadotâŠ
Theyâre raking in cash with renewals, auctions, premium pricing.
Even Atom now puts the .ai category front and center because they know it sells.
Eventually, the noise will settle.
The AI buzz will normalize.
Just like every wave before it.
Remember when every startup had a .io?
Now half of them redirect to a .com or just donât exist anymore.
Remember when NFTs were the future of ownership?
Today most of those domains point to dead Discords and landers.
The same thing will happen here.
At some point, âAI-poweredâ wonât be a differentiator itâll be expected.
Just like âmobile-firstâ or âcloud-basedâ stopped being sexy.
And when that happens, a flashy .ai domain wonât mean anything.
Itâll be just another extension in the drop-down menu.
The cool kids will have moved on to the next thing maybe .xyz again, maybe .si, maybe something we havenât seen yet.
And .ai domains will quietly fade into the background.
The serious projects?
Theyâll switch to .com for trust.
Or theyâll realize they never needed the trend-driven domain in the first place.
Thatâs what happens after every hype cycle:
Shiny becomes standard.
Standard becomes invisible.
And the world keeps spinning.
Meanwhile, all the âboringâ businesses that stayed on .com?
Theyâll still be there.
Theyâll still be trusted.
Theyâll still be the foundation.
Iâm not saying .com is superior because of nostalgia.
Iâm saying every time thereâs a shiny new TLD, it rides the wave⊠but .com always ends up back on top. Itâs the gravity of the internet.
So yes, AI is real.
But the domain hype? Thatâs a bubble. And bubbles pop.
Like in every bubble, people say:
âAs long as the musicâs playing, youâve got to dance.â đ”đ
And sure you can dance a little.
Grab a few .ai domains. Ride the wave.
Ignore it completely and you might miss some upside.
But donât forget: when the music stops, the lights come on.
And many of these shiny domains will rebrand to .com anyway.
Meanwhile, the boring, solid businesses will still be there.
Not doing AI. Not chasing trends.
Just quietly printing money.
So yeah, play with the trend.
But donât lose sight of the fundamentals.
Put a few dollars on .ai if you wantâŠ
But keep your core bets on what lasts.
đĄ Long-term > hype. Always.
đ Think long-term.
