ECP argues that allocative rationality requires market-like price signals with certain institutional prerequisites. Even if your goal is food, water, shelter, you still need a way to compare alternative uses. Outcomes alone don’t tell you whether the means were used well.

labour is fixed at production, whether it counts as “socially necessary” depends on changing conditions so value isn’t determined by labour itself, but by how much of that labour the market validates after the fact. labour is static and expected utility the real regulator

I don't understand defending this with: "We don't say ehe in our culture" a DUB is meant to translate their culture into words you can understand, not change their culture into yours. If you want to experience your own culture, you can just play a game made in your culture. 🙄

Boiling down Lara Croft to just a sex bombshell is genuinely its own form of misogyny. It always comes back to the idea that a character who is sexy can only exist in pornography. Lara is capable, confident and a bombshell. She can be and is all those things at once.
Sophie Turner says her version of Lara Croft isn't about being a "sex bombshell" “It’s about her and her story and what drives her, rather than what so many people also love about her, which is how hot she is in the games and the movies. But I really want to show the other side.” (latimes.com/entertainment-ar…)

I think Sofie looks good, but if having big breasts is part of Lara crofts design then why not stuff her bra. We have superheros wear muscle suits to make them look as muscular as they are supposed to be despite it being beyond the actors normal physicality.

Rawls is overrated for many reasons: the ideal theory, the unargued for assumptions about equality and the overriding importance of justice, and esp his inability to see that moral desert undermines the difference principle. He offered a just-so story that gave left liberals the feeling that their politics were Very Serious and Rational. He wrote 600 pages of deduction from a slew of false assumptions, but it had the look of seriousness. If Rawls’ work disappeared and was forgotten, very little knowledge would be lost.
“The story of Anglo-American liberal political philosophy is…a ghost story, in which Rawls's theory lived on as a spectral presence long after the conditions it described were gone." I doubt the conditions ever existed, so all the more reason to move on.

It has come to my attention that this is one of the most devastatingly bad Supreme Court rulings in the history of Supreme Court rulings.
The financialization of everything has been a disaster on a large and general scale and its hard to see it because its everywhere. Billion dollar public companies don't exist to "make quality clothes" or whatever "stated mission", they exist to make another billion dollars. And they do it by reducing "clothes" (or food, or art, or architecture, or whatever) down to the most cost-efficient widget. Women's nylon hose used to be strong enough to tow a car. But you can't sell a million pairs if they last that long so...have to make it worse so companies can make another billion. If we want to have real things, we have to support the real people who make them. I am inspired to pop off because I just watched this video the other day... I have been thinking a lot on this... and then this post comes in my feed... insane stuff

We wouldn't expect the rate of disability in university populations to match the rate for the wider population. Though these numbers in america could be explained by disabled not having access to medical resources to get diagnosed lowering US pop disability rate by proxy.

Want to know where these crazy numbers come from? The MIT Living Wage Calculator, but with a twist: they doubled it! No seriously, that's where it comes from
$100k is officially lower middle class. Here's how much it costs to live "comfortably" in every US state:
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Schlagbaum doubled the numbers from the MIT Living Wage Calculator to arrive at a subjective and/or otherwise arbitrary definition of "comfortably" living. scottwinship.substack.com/p/apocalypse-n…

potential galaxy brain hypothesis: doctors don't take women seriously, so women get fewer medical interventions, therefore, they live longer
Medical misogyny is so rampant in the U.S. that it causes women to outlive men by 5.3 years.

Even a planner with perfect information & fixed preferences. can be improved by adding rival planners. A single plan grades itself by its own assumptions. Competing plans expose those assumptions, reveal better goals, and avoid getting trapped in tidy but artificial local optima.

If you try to replace all the bottom-up processes of exchange with Big Computer, you deprive Big Computer of the data generated from those bottom-up processes. The data isn't given, it arises & is discovered through action & interaction!

Bakunin had the better argument: "According to Mr. Marx, the people not only should not abolish the State, but, on the contrary, they must strengthen & enlarge it & turn it over to the full disposition of their benefactors, guardians & teachers – the leaders of the Communist party, meaning Mr. Marx & his friends – who will then liberate them in their own way. They will concentrate all administrative power in their own strong hands."
Marx’s ever relevant statements on the Lumpen Anarchist Mikhail Bakunin: “Bakunin is the greatest enemy the workers’ movement now has, because he combines ignorance with fanaticism.” “Bakunin is a man without knowledge, without theory and without the discipline that the workers’ movement requires.” “Bakunin is a destroyer, not a builder; his entire activity consists in breaking down organizations he cannot control.” “However revolutionary his phrases, Bakunin is counter-revolutionary in practice.” “Bakunin represents the politics of the lumpen elements who seek adventure instead of organization.” “Bakunin has just arrived in Geneva. He is an enormous lump of flesh, roughly cut out of raw meat, who nevertheless has the pretension of representing a theory.” Many of these quotes apply to individualistic Western leftists of today, who fail to discipline themselves & follow the collective will of a Revolutionary organization. Those who scream revolutionary slogans in order to posture as being the most morally virtuous, but in practice are counter productive to the common goals of the collective. This has always been the tendency of middle class & petty bourgeois anarchist “revolutionaries” who refuse to submit themselves to proletarian Communist discipline.

Not having seen the MMT light, I still stubbornly cling to the silly belief that when governments spend money, it’s mostly in order to get hold of and consume real resources, which means leaving fewer resources for other uses. Pity me.

Instead of cherry-picking our favorite anecdotes, we could look at the vast academic literature on state-owned enterprises, nationalization and privatization, and comparative economic organization. There is a clear consensus that SOEs underperform, but with important caveats. 1/
Two best airlines in the entire world — Singapore and Emirates — are majority state-owned. We can have a sophisticated conversation about public vs private for various industries but we need to roll our eyes at Matt Taibbi comparing everything to the Soviet Union.
