This is the thread you need on rents and the economic arguments around controls.
Hi @jreynoldsMP, I’m an economist who's come round to rent controls! Here’s why 🧵: Markets only work well if: -buyers & sellers have roughly equal power -producers respond to price signals & expand supply in response to scarcity -buyers can walk away if prices get too high

People keep saying Trump term II is the most corrupt administration ever, so I built a model to find out if it was true. I took the UN's definition of corruption, turned it into eight criteria and 100 points, and scored the leaders history remembers for looting their countries: Marcos, Suharto, Mobutu, Abacha, Obiang, Putin. Then I put every president since Eisenhower on the same scale, both parties, with every exoneration counted right alongside the convictions. Nixon scored 41 and no other American President scored over a 25. Trump's second term scored a 91, which ties him with Suharto and Mobutu and puts him above Marcos and Abacha. So he is not only the most corrupt president in American history. At this pace he finishes his term level with the most corrupt rulers of the last hundred years. PSA: don't come in my comments arguing about the results if you haven't read the full article, because ignorance is a choice. Full article is up now on my Substack (link in bio) and it's free.

What's this crypto billionaire buying for such an obscene amount of money? Labour have had years in government to get a grip on this. They've allowed the integrity of democracy to be put on sale.

The PM's ambition is welcome. Making life affordable requires reforming essential sectors like energy, transport and housing. But we already have extensive public control through regulation, what we lack, and need, is ownership. theguardian.com/politics/202…

This is what economic insecurity looks like: lives delayed, independence postponed, food skipped. We need more than crisis support — UBI as an income floor, UBS to cut essential costs, and a GND delivering decent jobs, wages and a secure future.
🚨 BREAKING: millions of young people are being forced to put life on hold. Financial hardship means that they’re having to delay major life milestones like moving out or learning to drive. Some are even cutting back on food and turning to food banks.

90% of England’s water industry owned by foreign investors. Customers treated as cash cows. £88.4bn paid in dividends since privatisation. 1 trillion litres of water a year, 20% of household supply, lost to leaks. 41+ trillion lost since privatisation. leftfootforward.org/2026/08/…

Billionaires spend millions buying politicians.. Those politicians pass laws forcing people into poverty… Then they criminalize poverty… Then put people in for-profit prisons and give contracts to the companies of their donors… Keeping people poor is profitable.
Palantir co-founder Joe Lonsdale is a major force pushing the Trump admin to lock up unhoused people. Lonsdale founded "The Cicero Institute," a lobbying group, 8 years ago. Now they've been instrumental in passing laws criminalizing camping or sleeping in public in 16 states. It's unclear why the billionaire has a passion project of getting homeless people incarcerated. motherjones.com/politics/202…

The demand to defund the police is a demand for fiscal responsibility. Police solve 2% of all major crimes, yet monopolize public safety budgets and narratives. The LA sheriff operates a $5.5b budget and 17 person PR unit to distract residents from the reality: there's no correlation between the rising costs of law enforcement and crime reduction. The data speaks for itself, which we exposed in WeHo. sheriffs.substack.com/p/she-…
Briahna Joy Gray argues that the political debate over “defund the police” has been deliberately narrowed to whether the phrase is electorally damaging and what the wording means, rather than whether its underlying policy should be defended. Gray argues that “defund could not be more literal,” and says opponents have succeeded in pushing politicians to debate the phrase instead of explaining or defending their previous support for “defund the police.” She points to continued growth in police budgets since 2020 and argues that the underlying case for “defunding” is “one of the easiest things to prove and support.” @briebriejoy | @FDsignifier

Lynching in the age of surveillance capitalism.
I think this has probably shocked me more than anything else. The Times ran multiple ads trashing Jason Arday. This one reached 195,746 people & ran until Aug 16 - today. There’s a rearguard action to defend journalism. But this isn’t journalism. It’s monetised racebait.

Absolute silence from the Prime Minister. We need to protect people now and a serious plan for our communities in the future. Labour haven't said a word on this because it requires a challenge to oil & gas. And this is why Labour will never be the answer - vested interests.
Increïble.

Half of England is in drought. 40% of us are under a hosepipe ban. Here’s what the water companies did with the 35 years they were given: 💧 2.87 billion litres leaked every single day. Nearly one in five litres put into supply, lost. 💧 A national hosepipe ban saves about 577 million litres a day. Five times less than they leak. They ration us to cover their own failure. 💧 25 reservoirs sold off. Not one major new reservoir built since 1992. 💧 England faces a 5 billion litre a day shortfall in public water supply by 2055. 💧 £85 billion paid out in dividends since privatisation. 💧 £0 of debt in 1989. Over £70 billion now. Borrowed against your bills, to pay their shareholders. 💧 Almost a third of your bill goes on servicing that debt and paying dividends. Not on pipes. 💧 Thames Water took a £3 billion rescue loan at 9.75% interest. You pay for that too. 💧 £25.3 million in pay for chief executives and finance directors last year, up on the year before, despite a bonus ban. Thames handed £4.1 million to senior staff the ban didn’t cover. They didn’t fail to fix the pipes because it was hard. They didn’t fix them because leaking is cheaper than investing, and the money got pissed away to the assorted circus of vulture capital. We don’t need better regulation of them. We don’t need tighter control of them. We need to own it. Public ownership. Nothing less.
Since Thames Water introduced a hosepipe ban 17 days ago they have now leaked 9,921,459,817 litres of water from their badly maintained, underinvested, cracked old network of pipes. thameswaterleakage.neocities…
