Africa’s cities could be among the continent’s greatest engines of economic transformation.
With 15 million young Africans entering the workforce each year, the challenge is to turn rapid urbanization into thriving businesses, higher productivity, and greater economic opportunity.
A new @WorldBankGroup report explores how to unlock this potential: worldbank.org/en/publication…
Sovereignty is built with concrete and kilowatts, not communiqués. GERD power, corridors and a Red Sea outlet, that's the homegrown model in practice. I've walked past crews pouring asphalt at 3am in Addis, no joke.
Ethiopia arrives with receipts: GERD, billions of trees & one of the cleanest grids on earth, while coal-built economies lecture the rest of us on climate.

The Third Phase of Corridor Development: Transforming Addis Ababa
The third phase of Addis Ababa’s Corridor Development Programme is progressing, extending from Goro through Koye Feche to Tulu Dimtu. This major urban transformation initiative is being implemented alongside a 22-kilometre riverside development project stretching from Kara, along Bole Airport Road, through Goro to Akaki.
Complementing these developments, extensive soil and water conservation interventions covering 11.2 hectares are being rapidly implemented to strengthen environmental sustainability, protect natural resources, and enhance the city’s urban landscape.
These integrated development initiatives reflect Addis Ababa’s continued commitment to building a modern, resilient, green, and livable city through coordinated urban infrastructure development and environmental restoration.
May God bless #Ethiopia and its people.
Institutionalized parties beat armed ethnonationalism every time. Fano, the OLA, the TPLF are roads to Syria & Libya. Prosperity offers growth, predictability & a seat at the global table. That's the choice.
"Political parties must provide a clear direction for peace and development, mobilize investment, develop new skills, and strengthen institutions that sustain growth across generations."

Facts. Even Gulf capital that once avoided us is now building downtown La Gare, because the mayor made this city investable again. Others talk masterplans for thirty years, Addis pours the concrete in five.
Every African Mayor needs to visit Addis Ababa and be inspired and ashamed they run a city in the same Africa as the Mayor of Addis Ababa, Adanech Abiebie!

Conditional routes breed conditional leverage. Djibouti collected monopoly rents for decades while instability festered on its doorstep. Ethiopia diversifying to Berbera is the rational hedge & no apologies needed.

Egypt failed at the ICJ, failed at the Security Council, so now it fights Ethiopians with Ethiopians. Shameless. Destabilization is cheaper than desalination for a country sitting on the Nubian Sandstone Aquifer.
59.2% revision sounds huge but I left a club in Bole at 3am and Ethiopians were still digging with excavators. Corridor works, industrial parks, none of it was in the old base year. The measured economy finally caught up with the real one.
Weekly Snapshot on the African Economy as at 6 November 2026
Business activity strengthened in Nigeria and Kenya in October 2026 while price pressures rose across East and West Africa. Nigeria's composite PMI rose to 53.2 points, a fifth consecutive month of expansion, and Kenya's Stanbic Bank PMI reached 52.5, its first expansion in eight months. Nigeria's Q2 2026 trade surplus of US$10.1bn was 68.3% above the Q1 level, with exports at 2.0 times imports (Proshare's computation).
October inflation rose to 5.5% in Ghana, 7.3% in Kenya and 5.8% in Uganda, where the rate climbed 1.2 percentage points in a month. Policy rates stand 8.5 percentage points above inflation in Ghana and 6.2 points in Uganda after its 225 basis-point increase, against 2.75 points in South Africa on September inflation (Proshare's computation).
Senegal's rejected revised 2026 budget raised energy subsidies 3.2 times to CFA790.3bn and the deficit forecast to 7.6% of GDP, Togo's fuel subsidy allocation rises 140.8% to CFA34.2bn (Proshare's computation), and South Africa has committed R10bn to fuel levy relief. GDP rebasing lowered South Africa's projected debt-to-GDP peak by 3.8 percentage points to 74.6% and enlarged Ethiopia's measured economy by 59.2%, leaving both countries' debt obligations unchanged.
Proshare will track the Bank of Uganda decision on November 12, the Bank of Ghana decision on November 18 and the South African Reserve Bank decision on November 19, the resolution of Senegal's budget and its US$2.2bn @IMFNews programme, the AGOA suspensions of South Africa and Rwanda from January 2027, and the Africa Energy Bank's commencement on January 4, 2027.
