Today I had the great privilege of praying at the tomb of Blessed Columba Marmion while visiting the grand nineteenth-century Abbey of Maredsous. Sadly, today the community is dying due to its lack of fidelity to monastic and liturgical tradition and its failure to live up to Marmion's wisdom. Perhaps there will come a time when Benedictine monks from a community such as Le Barroux or Fontgombault might be able to move in and reinvigorate this fortress of faith. (I thank the kind Belgian driver Rob for snapping a few photos with his phone; I had no camera on me.)

The Imperial Mexican flag at Emperor Maximilian’s sarcophagus in Vienna’s Imperial crypt. When I was young it was usually unadorned; but more and more, Mexicans are beginning to realise that their Second Empire may have been their last real chance at a truly Independent government.
“[T]he picture is complicated by the presence online of supporters of the SSPX on the one side, and Liberal Catholics on the other. Both would like to see the Holy See at war with the Traditional Mass, in order to show that the patient work of mainstream traditionalists over the last six decades is doomed.
“It is not doomed, however. It will surprise some readers to hear that the organisers regarded this year’s pilgrimage as a success: almost a miraculous success, in fact.”

Una Voce Official Statement on the Rome TLM Pilgrimage

I (Joseph Shaw, @LMSChairman ) will be doing some live tweeting on this account, of the events of the pilgrimage. I’ll arrange them as replies to this post.
Preparing for the first event of the Ad Petri Sedem pilgrimage (‘Summorum Pontificum’) with the Pax Liturgica conference. It takes place in the Augustinianum, right next to the massive pillars of St Peter’s Square. @OnePeterFive @latinmassuk
As yesterday ‘Low Mass’. I assume that since this the ICKSP’s usual slot in this shared church they had time constraints. We some nice instrumental music. Here in Rome they are preparing for Halloween …
My final tweet in this thread is to draw attention to the press release of @UnaVoceOfficial further clarifying some aspects of the organisation of the pilgrimage:

Nevertheless we are grateful for what we have been given. Our desire is not to score points off the Holy Father, but to show our devotion to him, to the Papacy, and to the See of St Peter. End/

On the confusion about what the Rome Pilgrimage was and was not expecting, I can make a preliminary clarification (I intend to write at greater length before long): 1/5 @latinmassuk @LMSChairman @OnePeterFive @CatholicHerald @RealAdVaticanum @dianemontagna

LATEST: Bishop Schneider in Saint Mary Majors Basilica prays for the Liturgical Unity of the Ordinary and Extraordinary and for the Liberation of the Old Rite:
“O Mary, Mother of God, O Queen of the Roman See, O Queen of Peace, bring us the olive branch from the hand of the Christ Child, heralding the advent of the liturgical reform, which will ensure the full and unrestricted use of the traditional Roman rite, so that we may once again experience that the Roman Church is our mother. Amen."

Some theories are circulating online about the Latin Mass pilgrimage, spread by people unconnected with it.
Some clarity below —
Organisers asked for permission for the Vatican Mass, via a letter delivered directly to Pope Leo by Bishop Schneider in December. The pilgrimage is in its 15th year, and is always held on the same date.
Organisers received no answer about the Mass until August, when the Secretariat of State replied to say they could not have Mass in the Vatican. Pilgrimage organisers then announced publicly that no Mass would take place in the Vatican.
Instead, pilgrims would process into the Vatican at 1pm on the Saturday, and then go to St Mary Major for a 3pm Mass. Permission for the procession into the Vatican was granted in April 2026.
Weeks after this, in September, St Peter’s announced an event taking place at 3:30pm at the Altar of the Chair (used by the pilgrimage last year for Mass).
Then this week – just yesterday I am told – organisers received another letter from the Secretariat of State informing them they could not even process into the Vatican as planned, and as permitted since April. Basilica events are not the prerogative of the Secretariat but of the Archpriest & the Fabric of St Peter’s: hence why the Secretariat of State’s involvement is so strange.
On Saturday, pilgrims walked through the streets up to the obelisk in St. Peter’s Square – accompanied by Italian state police – where they were stopped by the Vatican as this was the limit of the Italian police’s jurisdiction.
Then they were informed that their usage of St Mary Major’s had changed: they could only be inside for an hour.
Thus meaning that the planned and authorised pontifical solemn Mass would have to be a low Mass.
Also St Mary Major’s informed pilgrimage that no official photos could be taken
