I was very glad to talk yesterday to @sitsio and @ChooseAgape__ about Fr James Mawdsley, the TLM, the Jews, Holocaust denial and fascism -- quite a stimulating set of issues! Thank you both for publishing the hour-long podcast video: link in reply.

Read the Latest at @RealAdVaticanum to understand the full story of the Pilgrimage:
TLDR: The Letter from the Secretary of State shows the Ad Petri Sedem procession was refused entry to St Peter’s on 30 September, weeks before the event, yet pilgrims were only told the day before. However the Saint Peter's Sacristy had indicated 1 pm was feasible; Secretariat of State still blocked it. Lack of charity in denying the Mass at the basilica, lack of cooperation, and serious questions about last-minute transparency from organisers.
And the St Mary Major liturgy was never a Solemn High Mass. LMS and FIUV ChairmanJoseph Shaw, “permission was sought and gained for a Prelatial (Pontifical) Low Mass in St Mary Major.”
Earlier “cancellation” reports were based on incorrect information.

“[T]he picture is complicated by the presence online of supporters of the SSPX on the one side, and Liberal Catholics on the other. Both would like to see the Holy See at war with the Traditional Mass, in order to show that the patient work of mainstream traditionalists over the last six decades is doomed.
“It is not doomed, however. It will surprise some readers to hear that the organisers regarded this year’s pilgrimage as a success: almost a miraculous success, in fact.”

Unironically approve of the hood.
Woman at church yesterday showed up in a sweatshirt and literal pajama pants. Wore her hood the entire service. I was absolutely appalled. I hate this whole, “came as you are” narrative the Protestant church preaches. Other religions wouldn’t let you in if you dressed so disrespectfully. Why is it only Christian’s that are held to this standard? That we must just accept everything?

NEW: Members of the organising body of the annual Latin Mass pilgrimage to Rome have issued a statement about the weekend & the various restrictions faced ——
“Many members and supporters take part in the pilgrimage and we as an organisation are a member of the Caetus Internationalis Summorum Pontificum; we regard the annual pilgrimage as having great significance for the movement for the Traditional Mass. We would like to correct some misunderstandings which have arisen over the organisation of the pilgrimage this year.
The authorities (through the Secretariat of State) declined the Coetus’ request for the celebration of Mass in St Peter’s, in August. At that point it was hoped and assumed that it would nevertheless be possible to have a collective devotion of some kind for the pilgrims, in St Peter’s, as happened in 2023 and 2024 when permission for Mass was refused. The August letter did not rule this out, so the Coetus requested it.
This request was refused in a letter dated 30th September, which was however not received by the organisers until well into October.
In the meantime permission was sought and gained for a Prelatial (Pontifical) Low Mass in St Mary Major.
The Coetus was privileged to be allowed a Mass there on a Saturday, which is not normally allowed for pilgrim groups. A very reasonable time slot was allocated for this, and Mass ended at about 4:15, as would be expected.
The Cardinal Archpriest, the sacristans, and the Basilica security were all very helpful, and we are very grateful to them. The Dominican priests whose role is to hear confessions in the Basilica made themselves available to the pilgrims.
We are also grateful to the Lissom Grove choir and to the 1,500 pilgrims who filled this ancient Basilica.”

Today, at the meeting of the organizers of the Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage, Christian Marquant commented on the controversy stirred up on social media by people who wish to sow confusion:
1. The request to use the altar of the Chair in St. Peter’s Basilica was made on the day of Bishop Athanasius Schneider’s audience with Pope Leo at the Vatican, on 18 December 2025, ten months and one week before the Pilgrimage.
2. On 7 August, eight months after the request, a negative response arrived from the Secretariat of State of the Holy See. No alternative date was suggested for the Mass, contrary to what's claimed by those people hungry for the limelight.
3. On 8 September, Father Claude Barthe, chaplain of the Pilgrimage, sent a request to the Secretariat of State asking whether the Pilgrimage might enter the Basilica to pray at the tomb of St. Peter, as had happened in the fourteen previous years, even when no Mass was celebrated there: “May we nevertheless, on the coming 24 October, enter the Basilica in procession, pray for the Pope at the Confession, and adore the Blessed Sacrament at the Altar of the Chair? The Basilica’s sacristy informs us that this would be possible at 1 p.m., should Your Excellency grant us the necessary permission.”
4. On 30 September, the response was sent by post, delivered a few days later to the Apostolic Nunciature in Paris, and only reached Father Barthe on 12 October, less than two weeks before the Pilgrimage. The response was negative. The pilgrims would not even be allowed to enter the Basilica to pray.
5. This was not disclosed immediately at that time because the organizers still tried to obtain permission for the group to enter the Basilica, given the importance of that gesture and the scandal it would represent for the pilgrims, and for Catholics in general, to be denied entry in the context of a pilgrimage. Since these efforts were unsuccessful, the announcement was made one day before the procession that led the pilgrims to St. Peter’s Square.
6. Christian Marquant lamented the confusion stirred up by people who have no connection whatsoever with this initiative of Catholic faithful, and he emphasized that the Summorum Pontificum Pilgrimage has at its heart love for the Pope and for the Catholic Church.
Long live Christ the King! Viva Cristo-Rei!
If these sorts of posts were accompanied by three clear examples of ‘confrontation’ by ‘trads’ I’d begin to take them seriously. As it is they are just looking for clicks. Faff off.
The big problem is that Trads have to stop being so confrontational toward the Pope and the Church in general.
Whether they like it or not, any permission or favor toward the TLM by the Vatican was only supposed to be for the liturgy itself—not for using it as a rallying point to constantly criticize and attack Vatican II and modern Church policies.
Doing that just increases the likelihood of continued hostility toward the Latin Mass by the hierarchy and could possibly lead to its eventual suppression.
Love of and desire for the TLM must be separated from a desire to reject Vatican II. If Trads are incapable of this, then the future of the old Mass (at least in union with Rome) is bleak.

How can one be so disingenuous and excuse bad behavior?
Diocesan Trads are some of the meekest people in the Church. They do their utmost not to provoke any turmoil.
A single heterodox German bishop causes more trouble to the Church than a million lay faithful, yet his masses and pilgrimages remain unimpeded.
Let’s stop blaming the victims of ecclesiastical abuse: ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.

Catholics had ceased to be a political threat in 1745. The Test Act was repealed as part of a process of dealing with Irish Catholics who were in danger of *becoming* a political threat.
The Test Act wasn’t repealed because Britain saw the light about toleration, but because Catholics were no longer a political threat
Should any religious minority in the UK ever seem to be prioritising the interests of co-religionists over the country as a whole, we should not hesitate to reinstate a Test Act

This is — let’s not forget — one of the great churches of Christendom. We are having — not what I expected — Pontifical Low Mass, not High Mass. (With music, as is usual on these occasions.)

We’re not operating a ‘strategy’ (to achieve what?). Preserving the Church’s liturgical traditions is important because they have value in themselves and for the good of souls. Persecute us all you want, we’re not giving up.
Again, as I told you before, and you didn't want to hear it, the trad program is over. It is finished. Find another program. That strategy, and all of the ostentatious and outsized noise centered on it, will not be allowed.
Those of you who enjoyed it may not have wanted to hear what I told you about the pitfalls of employing this strategy, but the fact of its failure is now unavoidable.
Again, I beg you, shift to some other strategy of reform within union with the Church before you waste all remaining social and emotional capital trying to keep the ghost of 2007 present for the 10 to 30 years it might take to achieve some alternative renewal of something someone is willing to call traditionalism. Benedict flew off in a helicopter and never came back one day. You have had no other patron since. It's over.

As the organiser of the Mass on the right I reject the proposed contrast. @latinmassuk like diocesan priests and the Institutes celebrate the TLM is all kinds of churches and with the resources available. In fact I suspect that the music at the Mass on the right was more … 1/
splendid than at the one of the left. But because the pilgrimage had to move venues as short notice I was unable to get the scared ministers necessary for Missa Solemnis; if I had I would have got special vestments. It is not that @latinmassuk has a puritanical attitude … 2/
nor indeed does the priest here who is a fine musician and is wearing an ‘apparelled amice’. IFYYK 1st don’t read too much into to an image which reflects complex circumstances. 2, don’t make the best the enemy of the good. 3, let us have the TLM in every church, using the full range of furnishings and styles if these are worthy of the altar. /End

In his latest for @CatholicHerald, LMS Chairman Dr Joseph Shaw (@LMSChairman) discusses the case of Fr Chad Ripperger, his response to Archbishop James Golka of Denver, and the pressures that fame can place on priests and lay apologists
"Other Catholic celebrities have been less careful about keeping up appearances, and a number of celebrity priests have come a cropper simply for becoming too fond of the high life, or becoming convinced that their message is more important than their vow of obedience"
