The Caribbean is the best preserver of African and Indigenous culture.
Here are a few cultural traditions in the Caribbean and a brief description of them:
1.Shortknee (Grenada): Performers in colorful costumes with mirrors and beads cover their faces in white powder, carrying jungle bells or bell attached around ankles Rooted in African masking traditions, it blends African and French influences, using chants for social commentary and reflecting African spiritual practices.
2.Sensay (Dominica): Masqueraders wear shaggy costumes from ropes and animal skins, dancing dynamically with whips or sticks.
3.Shaggy Bear (Barbados): Covered in frayed fabric, performers mimic wild, ghostly movements. It draws from African animalistic masquerades, symbolizing power and using dramatic performance to channel protective spirits.
4.Bรฉlรฉ Dance ( Martinique, Dominica, St. Lucia, Grenada & St. Vincent, many other names in different countries ): This rhythmic dance features drumming and call-and-response singing, emphasizing fluid footwork. Originating from African fertility dances, it served as social expression and cultural preservation among enslaved Africans.
5.Big Drum Dance (Carriacou, Grenada): Featuring drumming and dances representing different African nations, itโs performed at weddings and funerals. It preserves African ethnic identities and serves as a living archive of ancestral traditions in the Caribbean.
6.Jab Jab (Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago): Performers covered in black oil or molasses carry chains or whips, embodying a devilish figure. The tradition reflects African warrior dances and symbolizes defiance against colonial oppression, transforming the โdevilโ into a symbol of resistance.
7.Bwa Bwa or Moko Jumbie (Dominica, St. Lucia, Grenada, Trinidad & Tobago, Virgin Islands): Stilt-walkers in elaborate costumes perform high above the crowd, representing protective spirits. The practice originates from West African โMokoโ spirits, embodying resilience and serving as cultural guardians in Caribbean festivals.

Can we once and for all dispense with this tedious "But he always took the bins out and said hello" commentary, as if there was a contradiction here that needed explaining.
Violent men ARE "nice guys".
They're nice to everyone but the women they abuse. That's the whole point.
