Photonics testing in action - @zpmtechnology loves ring resonators but not all rings are built the same - so we test thousands until there's 1 ring to rule them all
Robotics for the win🤖

I designed an analog mixed-signal radio chip with an AI agent: about 700 prompts in a week, and it's now submitted for tapeout.
Here's how it went at each step of the design, the times it was confidently wrong, and how I caught them.

Do you do photonics? Do any of your friends do photonics? Here is a nice photonic chip mapped out.

this is why I hate JMP and JMP users, and I even start to have similar feelings towards grafana and grafana users now.. There is so much more richness in your data and in the way you analyze and present your data. Sometimes you don't realize how differently data could be presented until you try it out. Don't drag drop the defaults and call it a day. Does it spark joy in you? It should, and it should spark joy in others too.

should've bought some photonics stocks when I first saw this video.. anyway this is a photonic integrated circuit chip from a 1.6T DWDM transceiver module by Infinera (2 wavelengths x 2 polarizations (DP-64QAM) x 96 GBaud), and I'll make some guess on what is going on on this PIC.
before I start, you can zoom in onto the edges and see the facets were cleaved... (the year was already ~2020)

this figure is clean so I had to ask claude to make it interactive.
PIC from Nokia bell labs and made by AMF. Free running laser linewidths improved by 50~60 dB, yeah you read that right, MHz to 10s of Hz, at the cost of SIL plus electro-optic feedback.
this reminded me I should also redo my infinera 1.6T DWDM chip analysis with this style of interactive component and subsystem in addition to plain text yapping.
no one was gross enough to think this was spit / drool / saliva
it creates unique tendril like patterns as it dries from the outside in - called “ferning" or "arborisation" due to proteins & crystalline parts
apparently hormones make the patterns more prominent
it’s our show n tell wafer - no one was out here disrespecting wafers with their mouth juice unsupervised lol

Kenso Soai – awarded the 2026 #NobelPrize in Chemistry – designed the first chemical reaction in which only one of the potential mirror images was formed. Other than life itself, no one had ever achieved this feat. The Soai reaction is one of the most spectacular chemical experiments ever conducted.
wrote an article for @sotalikesfuture on sensing for physical AI and why we need a total transformation in sensors
what can i say, i like my hardware hard, and my intelligence local

PCB and Component Assembly Plushy Set
This plush has trace artwork of a real 555 timer circuit plush parts included.
Easy Assembly and Rework.
timeline full of astra vibed PCBs and “that” folding phone?
get groovy with a top view of the v-groove fiber array, one of the most important building blocks in silicon photonics! its the big black block with the pretty lil scallops (each scallop is a fiber)
fiber array attach is everyday bro for us
here’s a v-groove array going through a 9DoF alignment for bonding to our photonic integrated circuit
you can see the little fibers like teeth
light goes down into gratings and up from grating on the chip
the first time we tried this it took 4hrs, lots of swearing in various languages
now it takes us 5mins, we also reuse the fibers cos we figured out how to rip them off
a startup is a bundle of unresolved assumptions pretending to be a company. product, market, team, timing, distribution, culture, & financing. several of these can look settled right up until they aren’t.
that’s why the emotional volatility is rational, cuz the underlying object itself is volatile. one week you learn something that makes the future look enormous & the next you learn something that invalidates six months of work.
