Heads up that in the last decade, the full-time equivalent salary on the minimum wage is up 77% from £15k to £26.5k
Meanwhile both the personal allowance and the 40% tax band threshold haven't moved in seven years
In 2016 someone earning minimum wage paid just £795 of tax a year; now they pay £2,773
£16000 in Scotland, with 50% marginal rate including NI to the £50270 threshold.
Higher in Scotland. Worth checking very carefully the extent of NHS part time working & early retirement. Disincentives have consequences.

Date not quite right: it's actually Thursday 19 November.
HOW DO YOU FIT SCOTLAND’S HISTORY INTO AN HOUR?

Many congratulations to @AntonMuscatelli who did so much to initiate, develop and lead the deep partnership between @Sydney_Uni & @UofGlasgow
I am hugely grateful to @Sydney_Uni for awarding me an honorary doctorate yesterday. The strategic partnership between Sydney and @UofGlasgow has strengthened immeasurably in recent years and it’s wonderful to see it flourishing in so many different areas of research.

Running out of other people’s money & pretending those they are borrowing from are stealing it.
France has short workweeks; public and social spending, as shares of GDP, above the European Union average; a fiscal policy that could hardly be further from austerity; heavily regulated labor markets; and extraordinarily generous paid vacation entitlements. In short, it has everything an opponent of neoliberalism could wish for their own country.
France is also home to advocates of degrowth and even more burdensome redistributive policies. Economists like Thomas Piketty urge other countries to impose higher tax rates and introduce new taxes to combat inequality.
Yesterday, France was engulfed in flames. Police forces were overwhelmed by violent, opportunistic mobs engaged in widespread destruction and looting, for whom the very notion of private property seemed either alien or laughable.
And what do many blame for the chaos?
Neoliberalism, of course.
Let that sink in, fellas.
1980, pension age France 65, life expectancy 74; 2026, 62 & 83. That’s a lot of public spending. Macron’s attempts at reform met by earlier waves of protest. Economics is not ‘convenient’, it is about choices & a state under pressure makes poor ones.
6th Joan MacCormack Lecture at U.Aberdeen just started with Laurent Jaffro (@SorbonneParis1 ) speaking on a subject close to Joan’s heart. 40th anniversary conference for Aberdeen & the Enlightenment due tomorrow.
Back again signing in Stirling @oldstpublishing & looking forward to @standrewsbkfest in London next month.
The issue is it is dealing with far more passengers than it was ever designed to do- 17M in 2025, more than twice Glasgow which it used to trail.
Edinburgh Airport last night. Passengers from 3 flights bussed to, and then herded through a narrow entrance to climb a staircase, to then descend another in order to join a massive queue at passport control!
It's a dreadful experience, which feels almost third world, and a terrible welcome to our capital City.
And who owns Edinburgh Airport? The highly profitable Vinci Airports (French) and Blackrock!
The great arguments for privatisation included modernising and responding better to customer demands, but what we've ended up with in Edinburgh is fat cat profit over national pride.
In my day the General Paper was one word to write on for three hours- 'Discretion' was mine. I particularly hated the last paper's task of translating five passages in five languages in 3 hours & being called out for an interview in the middle !
Today I learned about the All Souls examination, which is reputed to be the hardest exam in the world.
To even be considered, you need to have a degree from, or be a current graduate student of Oxford.
Hundreds of people sit and only two people pass every year.
Attached is last year's general exam.
Before I saw it, I wondered, how hard could it be.
Well, it turns out…it's "Defend ghosting.", "Does a pope matter?", and "Is body language a language?" hard:
