His racial identity, family, upbringing and cultural roots did not disappear because his skin lost pigment. And the absurdity of asking whether he’d still be THIS big if he’d “stayed Black”? He was already a global phenomenon as a Black man. Thriller was breaking records. His music videos were changing the industry. His influence was reshaping pop culture. He didn’t become Michael Jackson because his skin got lighter. He became Michael Jackson because he was Michael Jackson. Stop confusing a medical condition with a racial identity, and stop rewriting history to make his complexion the explanation for his greatness.
