Naipaul, The New York Review of Books, 1990 THEN: Bhindi became surrounded by claims that the spirit of the Tenth Guru had descended upon him, even that he was an “Eleventh Guru,” according to Gill. Along with Baaz flying over his head like Dasam Pita. AND THEN: When asked about his successor, Bhindranwale said: “It is not an elective post. I think whosoever attains the status of God will come up as my successor.” Let’s analyse this - Religious symbolism → Guru comparison → claims of divine status → a succession defined in terms of attaining the status of God. The question is not whether he was literally a Guru. The question is how an ordinary contemporary preacher came to be elevated into a quasi-Guru figure — and what that elevation enabled. His own followers believe and follow every word he has said in his recorded speeches to be armed at all times. And to them their enemy will always be Hindu majority India as was Bhindi’s. The Gun culture is purely Bhindranwale’s rhetoric “For every village you should keep one motorcycle, three young baptized Sikhs and three revolvers.”
