I don’t know why data centers have become this generations nuclear power.
Unlike nuclear power, there is a 0% chance that a data center can lead to any sort of disaster scenario.
This project in Utah is:
- in an uninhabited area
- bought and repurposed water already in use
- is bringing its own power, so it won’t cost citizens anything
It’s like being against building a nuclear power plant in the middle of Nevada, except there is no radioactive waste. No fall out. No risk of anything.
It’s a big computer in the middle of nowhere, that is self sufficient in all resources.
There are a million real problems in America.
Data centers just aren’t one.
now i see posts saying "war with luddites"
escalating this isn't good if you're so advanced and evolved and future facing you wouldn't fall into this dumb cycle
you need the world on board and it should be obvious that it's time to cut this "permanent underclass" rhetoric

After this whole debate about DLSS 5 I came to the conclusion that most of the people talking about it are completely unaware of what they don't know...they're on the peak of ignorance and don't even grasp how little they understand.
They just heard generative AI and like Pavlov's dog they just start drooling thinking it's the same shit as unethical slop image generators...for the love of Christ...go and educate yourself before raging on the internet for no reason.
DLLS 5 is not a prompt based generator...it's not creating stuff based on someone else's images and hallucinates results. It uses the information from the raster to build up a final render frame with the same information but with better lighting and shading...
I'll even give you an example on how much of an impact better shading and lighting has. This is a character I've worked on not long ago. On the left you have a raster render, with some bad shaders. On the right you have a render with raytrace on, a much better shader for both hair and skin. They don't even look like the same person...do they? This is what DLSS5 is doing....getting a result like the one on the right(tbh a lot better) at a smaller cost than actually rendering it.
Still the same geo, same textures, same light sources.
Some of you will go and say the one on the left is better and it's the artist's vision. It's not...it's just the artist's limitation due to shading and lighting constrains. Every single artist out there would love to get the right result in real time.

"Data centers suck up too much power. They should generate their own on a separate grid"
"No, not like that!"
This is not about logic, proper economics, or balanced electricity markets, it's about a knee-jerk emotional reaction to people building stuff.

This effect was done to replicate the look of subsurface scattering before it became technically possible (around 2002) - it was common in post to combine multiple renders and paint in extra skin shading.

Something we discovered by accident: what happens if we start Genie 3 from a video and a completely unrelated prompt? Turns out the model really, really wants to make it work, to the point where it emulates itself.
The prompt in this one is about a trex on a tropical island.

They do. Most assume that AI is copy/pasting directly from an artists work, which of course isn't how they work... at all.
There is a lot of justifiable fear and anger that these tools are going to disrupt every profession, so despite the possibilities for the good, scared people are fighting on maintaining the status quo, rather than embracing the most creatively empowering tools in the history of humanity.
It's identical to every technological shift in human history, so it's not surprising, but it is disappointing. Change is hard, but AI isn't going away, so my philosophy is to grab a surfboard and start paddling and catch the biggest creative waves we've ever seen.
We are entering the "Great RenAIssance" and those who choose to embrace AI as a collaborator—rather than an enemy—will win.
What a remarkable time to be alive.

I guess I kinda understand being anti-text predictor, but people are gonna see robots that can genuinely legitimately cook for you and go "How can you desire such an inhuman machine!", like bruh. Everyone's wanted this for like 100 years. It is the holy grail.

Did you know that an artificial neural network is designed to mimic the brain?
Inspired by biological neurons in the brain, artificial neural networks are large collections of “neurons”, or nodes, connected by “synapses”, or weighted couplings, which are trained to perform certain tasks. An artificial neural network processes information using its entire network structure. The inspiration initially came from the desire to understand how the brain works.

>probably never will
This assumption makes sense only if you believe that there’s something supernatural about human intelligence, like a divine spark that cannot be manufactured.
Otherwise there’s simply no reason to claim that intelligence cannot be artificially replicated.
