SIR PATRICK STEWART (1940-2026)
Before everything else, Patrick was defined by being born and bred in Yorkshire, the proud county in the north of England which he loved to the end. You could hear it in his accented voice and in the stern honesty with which he told you what he thought and felt. Yorkshiremen have no truck with half-truths or avoidance of big issues. He wore his heart on his sleeve, which made him a man to rely on, to admire and in my case, love.
We first met as ambitious young actors with the Royal Shakespeare Company half a century ago but we weren’t in the same productions. My first strong memory was a few years later, meeting him in the street in central London when he told me about an offer to take over a leading part in 'Star Trek'. “But Patrick think of your stage career in the UK. Do you really want to risk—getting lost in Hollywood for years and years?”. Well, he took the risk and thank goodness for us all that he did for not just his devoted Trekkies but film and theatre audiences, who marvelled at his using international celebrity to star in a string of cinema successes ('X-Men' of course) and in great classical plays by Shakespeare, Ibsen, Arthur Miller, Peter Shaffer, Pinter and Beckett at Stratford-upon-Avon, in London’s West End and on Broadway.
America was his adopted home, where he met his adored Sunny who has cared for him through sickness and health, through thick and thin. But he never forsook his origins: and the proudest achievement of the most respected and beloved actor of his generation on either side of the Atlantic, was his appointment as Chancellor of Huddersfield University in Yorkshire.
His farewell performance in 'Avengers: Doomsday' is yet to be seen.

Walter Isaacson asks Peter Thiel what humans can uniquely do in the AI era.
Thiel: "We're very relational… these relational dimensions will become more important."
When knowledge is worth $0, the only career skills that matter:
- networking / social calibration
- persuasion (sales)
- curiosity (harnessing AI)
- taste (curation)
- storytelling
- grit
- golfing with clients (or equivalent)

Salman Rushdie is a lucky man. Hindus have not threatened to behead him, even when he has insulted them or their religion.
About 37 years ago he wrote a book that enraged followers of another faith. Most of us from that generation know what happened after that. However, for the benefit of Gen Z, who may not, after it was published, a fatwa was issued and a price put on his head. He went into hiding. Decades later, he came out, thinking the danger had passed. It had not. At a public event he was attacked, lost an eye, and nearly lost an arm.
Now he has compared the RSS to the violent, insurrectionist Irish Republican Army. He can say that because he knows criticism of Hindus is safe for him. There will be outrage, and then it will pass.
Why doesn’t he write another book about the religion that cost him an eye and nearly an arm, and see what happens?

Hardly a bhakt, but the spectacle of Salman Rushdie being highly concerned about Hindu nationalism in India being a threat when his eye was gouged out in upstate New York by a California born Muslim 33 years after the Iranian ayatollah declared a fatwah on him for writing a book… is quite something.

Zohran Mamdani’s five-word statement that Benjamin Netanyahu is a war criminal has been widely shared.
Many people think he’s just going after one Israeli leader. That reading is completely mistaken. In reality, Mamdani is posing as a fighter for justice and a self-appointed moral authority, taking advantage of the global outrage against Israel.
What he is actually pushing is his extreme political ideology through the core BDS project, Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions, aimed at the eventual dismantling of Israel as a Jewish state, while also challenging capitalist America itself.
He was shaped by the intellectual world of Columbia University through his father, Mahmood Mamdani, a leading postcolonial scholar and longtime BDS advocate who was close friends with Edward Said.
The dinner-table debates on colonialism, Fanon, and the illegitimacy of ethno-religious states formed his worldview from childhood. He has never apologized for this inheritance.
He has backed BDS, defended the “from the river to the sea” slogan as a call for Palestinian rights, and stated he cannot support any state that privileges one religion, explicitly including the world’s only Jewish state.
Mr. Mamdani is not alone in this view. Philosopher Edward Said was firmly on the socialist side, sharply critical of capitalism and imperialism. This creates a clear social-communist-Islamic connection running through his father, Columbia University, and the broader movement that shaped him. It’s a belief system, built on hatred of Israel and, crucially, of America itself.
On July 4th he condemned America on the country’s own birthday. He wants not only to dismantle Israel but to reshape America into a fundamentally different outlook that rejects the capitalist foundations of the United States as we know it.
Now he holds the mayoralty of New York City, home to the largest Jewish community outside Israel. While promising free buses and affordable housing, he has delivered viral clips and moral signaling instead.
He understands that the current climate of disinformation, blood libel, and false genocide accusations against Israel is his moment. This is his time to capitalize on the fabricated global outrage supported by the same people he backs.
Mr. Mamdani is not only targeting the head of the state. He is targeting “the Zionist State”, an occupying colonial entity based on his father’s teachings and his anti-colonial background. He is also challenging capitalist America.
Understand his belief system and you see his real agenda.
