Sen. Lisa Blunt Rochester sent Roger Goodell five questions about Jalen Hurts and the NFL’s DVT and pulmonary embolism protocols. They’re the right questions. Here are the medical answers and what the league still needs to clarify.

Has to be 100% done of the time! If any clot, have to search deep too. Part of the same doppler study anyways. Standard of care.
Right question, but "superficial" doesn't always mean harmless. In the POST study (leg SVTs 5 cm+, specialist clinics), about 1 in 4 people already had a DVT or PE at diagnosis. When a clot is called superficial, how often do you still scan the deep veins?

Forget the controversy Let's focus on the player/person
The focus now should be on Jalen Hurts’ health and recovery from PE. His season is over, but recent NFL history provides real optimism that he can return to football after completing treatment. Player first. The NFL and NFLPA can determine the rest.

More optimism for @Ravens QB
Lamar Jackson moved around well during Thursday’s media viewing and didn’t favor his sprained left ankle at all. During warmups (with no defenders), Jackson made a couple nice deep throws to LaJohntay Wester and Rashod Bateman.

Former @Eagles head ATC @proatc. If Rick was still in Philly and gave this type of update, there likely would be no #JalenHurts controversy and investigation
The #Chiefs, when they have a health situation that requires more context, send out head trainer Rick Burkholder to explain it to the media. He did that today with LT Josh Simmons. Here’s his full explanation:

#DavanteAdams hamstring avulsion Surgery foreshadowed here on Monday Now announced
Davante Adams suffered an unusual distal medial hamstring tendon avulsion. He is headed to IR, but a return this season remains possible. The likely timeline points closer to December.

All for transparency! Have been lobbying for a pool reporter to be able to speak to a medical person postgame just like for referees.

Agree🎯 And it will not be an @NFLPA investigation But joint @NFL & @NFLPA appointed doctors Look fwd to the results!
From @TheAthletic: If the NFL truly acted in the best interest of Jalen Hurts, one of its most decorated and well-known players, an investigation should substantiate that, our columnist writes. The league and the Eagles should have nothing to hide. nyti.ms/4BiyGCX

The entire Jalen Hurts timeline hinges on one distinction: DVT or superficial vein thrombosis? If DVT was diagnosed before London, he should not have played. If it was only SVT, clearing him met medical standards. That distinction matters. @PatMcAfeeShow

Yes, @PatMcAfeeShow. Jalen Hurts should have the opportunity to resume his NFL career once treatment is complete. The immediate issue is anticoagulation. He’ll likely need blood thinners for 3-6 months and cannot play while taking them.
