In my calculus class, I said "to pass this class, you have to know things." The room went as quiet as a morgue.
Somehow we've reached a point in education where:
- teaching kids explicitly is controversial
- academic rigour is treated as a threat to student wellbeing
- memorizing math facts is discouraged or considered unnecessary
- practice is dismissed as "drill and kill"
Low expectations are not kindness, and nothing hurts someone's confidence more than falling further behind every year.

200% more admin tasks for faculty, some places, 500% more. Document this, document that, evidence based decision making by management needs data that has to be manufactured. Also whole layers of approvals- syllabus, assessments, academic misconduct charges, trips,

Churchill could have shortened WW2 by years if he had just “done a deal” with Hitler. George Washington could have done a deal to end the American Revolution. Zelenskyy is in good company.

"[D]avenport and Ballew signed a two-year lease in October 2023 for a vacation property near Miami that cost $30,000 a month". What people fail to realize is that this is an investment in the future of our students.

Fields medallist Hugo Duminil-Copin was deeply shaken by OpenAI’s release of more than 700 AI-generated mathematical manuscripts, including work on 16 questions directly relevant to his research.

“They have annihilated my field of research.”

Universities say they’re so concerned about wealth inequality.
Apparently the solution is to pay the president over 1 million a year, give an army of administrators high six-figure salaries, and leave teenagers with the debt.

I understand that you can’t make my meeting with the Provost, but that’s okay; you weren’t invited.

Remember all those things the dean promised you? The provost said no. To everything.

Quasi-RH?!?!???! Are you kidding me? If a human did this, it would be an instant Fields Medal, no questions asked.
RH says zeta has no zeros in Re(s)>1/2. The best we had until a second ago was a region that got thinner and thinner the higher up the imaginary axis you go. I thought maybe they’d fatten that up a bit, that’d be a massive breakthrough. But no. They got a zero free strip!!!! Insane
We’re releasing a broad range of new mathematical results produced by an internal frontier model.
We’ve been consulting with the independent Advisory Group on Mathematics and Artificial Intelligence at the Institute for Advanced Study, and we have drawn on their advice and public recommendations to inform how we release these results.

Yep. Economic judgements during a divorce are not about moral fairness. It is part of the pain.
Wife: “He’s refusing to pay spousal support.”
Husband: “After she left the marriage for another man?”
Judge: “I understand why you’re upset. But we’re here to determine financial support, not decide who was the better spouse.”
Husband: “She earns $68,000 a year. I earn about $240,000. But she also walked away with half the savings and the house.”
Judge: “Is that accurate?”
Wife: “We haven’t sold the house yet.”
Judge: “Do you have access to other assets?”
Wife: “Yes, but most of my share is tied up in the house.”
Judge: “How long were you married?”
