This Halloween, the ghost to watch out for isnโt under your bed. Itโs on your order screen.
In futures trading, the thing that should scare you is one number: the Est. Liq. Price. It is the estimated price at which your position gets closed automatically because your margin can no longer cover the loss.
Here is why leverage changes it so much. Take a long position on BTCUSDT with isolated margin.
The figures below are approximate and ignore fees and maintenance margin:
โ At 5x leverage, the price needs to fall roughly 20% before liquidation
โ At 10x leverage, roughly 10%
โ At 20x leverage, roughly 5%
The position is the same and the market is the same.
Only the leverage changed, and with it the room the trade has to survive a pullback.
Bitcoin can move 5% in a single day, so at 20x that margin for error is thin.
Three habits that take the fear out of it:
โ Read the Est. Liq. Price before you confirm the order, not after
โ Use isolated margin so a single trade cannot take the rest of your balance with it
โ Set a Stop Loss so you choose where the trade ends, and remember that fast markets can fill it at a different price
Leverage is not the enemy. Opening it without knowing your liquidation price is.
