As an epidemiologist, I often hear about COVID in past tense. COVID-19 is very much still here. The last two years were the mildest COVID-19 seasons to date, but they caused a similar level of hospitalizations as two very severe flu seasons.

Infectious passion but no infectious disease transmission 🙌 🏅😷
📹 Boxall cam of THAT epic win. On the final night of 2026 Pan Pacs, Lani Pallister disrupted Katie Ledecky’s decade-long dominance of the women’s 800m freestyle in front of an American home crowd. 💥💪🐬 Two mighty competitors. One epic race to remember.

I know it's important to keep wearing an N95 & trying to avoid illness but it's so isolating sometimes. I feel like I exist in a different version of reality than my family members. I wish I knew at least one other person who lived nearby who also masked. 😭

Masking 😷 teacher fashion in my favorite color #OneOfTheTwo #SaltingTheVibes #YallMasking Mask cover from love-the-look.com (not sponsored just love them!)
First day teaching in-person since March 2020 was a success. Cannot believe most students wrote an entire draft of a literacy narrative by hand in one class session. The youngsters thirst for acoustic writing practice.

I developed sudden severe insomnia after a CT scan with contrast (not MRI). I collaborated with someone this also happened to, and we made a short survey to document cases so this can be formally studied. If you’ve had a reaction to CT contrast, please fill it out (link below):

Staying at hotels in Covid times is becoming proven to be a way of getting infected.
Yet another ROBUST hotel transmission study - lower upper room. Case 1's bathroom exhaust went up the brick brown exhaust stack, and Case 2 got infected, because the exhaust stack was positively pressured. Published May 2026. sciencedirect.com/science/ar… /Thread.

Today I met with Senator Alex Padilla's staff about our ongoing air quality measurements in South Bay San Diego. It was one of the most productive conversations we've had on this crisis. Here is why I'm hopeful. For two years my group has run continuous measurements of hydrogen sulfide and other toxic gases along the Tijuana River and coastal San Diego — as far as I know, the longest continuous record of its kind anywhere. Two years of nights when families in Imperial Beach, Coronado, Nestor, and San Ysidro couldn't open their windows. Two years of headaches, lost sleep, and children kept inside at school. After staying up most of the night working through that record alongside river flow data, the picture is clear: this is driven by flow. The water isn't just carrying pollution past these communities — turbulence as it moves through the channel strips toxic gases out of the water and into the air people are breathing. How much water goes where, and when, largely determines what South Bay and our Navy Seals and their families breathe at night. That matters, because a problem you understand is a problem you can act on. Instead of pointing at "sewage" in general, we can now point to the specific conditions that produce the worst air, and to change that will reduce it. That is what we brought to Senator Padilla's office, and we now have a real plan. More to come soon. None of this happened just because scientists showed up. It happened because this community refused to stop saying something was wrong, long before anyone measured it. Our job was to put data behind voices. I am more optimistic than I have ever been on this topic.

My birthday is Friday, August 14th. The only thing I want for my birthday (other than this bomb-ass cake) is for us to protect ourselves and each other. As the summer covid wave hits, please mask up to protect yourself and those around you. 😷💕

You don't need to stand up an MSO/PC or hire doctors to add prescribing to your product. Appendix is Stripe for prescriptions. Your app sends a clinical summary to our API, a human physician reviews it, and sends Rx when appropriate. You get the outcome by webhook. No sales call required. Our documentation is public at appendix.com/docs, and sandbox keys are free and instant.
