There was a time I went to inspect a farm in Ijebu Ode. The farm owner came to pick me up and after the inspection, it was already late, so I asked him to drop me at a hotel because I don’t like night trips. It was a weekend, and my first mistake was not booking a room ahead. I went straight to the bar, ordered catfish pepper soup with a couple of cold Budweisers, and when it was almost 10 p.m. and I started feeling sleepy, I went to the reception to get a room. “Sorry, no vacant room.” Omo! 😭 I went outside the gate looking for a bike. No cab. Everywhere was strangely quiet, almost like there was a curfew. Luckily, I saw a bike that had just dropped someone off. I quickly asked him to take me to another hotel. Same thing. No vacant room. This bike man ended up taking me to about nine different locations, and there was still no room anywhere. The whole town was so quiet, and I wasn’t familiar with the area. At that point, I was genuinely getting worried. I was even tempted to tell the bike man to take me to his house, but that would have been another level of risk. Besides, the man was already getting pissed. 😂 So I told him to take me back to the last hotel we checked. As we got there, I saw the security man and asked him how much the room cost. He told me the price, so I explained my situation and suggested that I would pay him the hotel room rate if he could let me use his room for the night. Omo! Sharply, the guy agreed. 😂 He changed the bedsheet, locked the gate, and went back to the reception to stay with the other staff on night shift. Despite being extremely tired, I couldn’t sleep. I just lay there praying for daybreak. By 5:30 a.m., I got up and left. Till today, I still don’t understand why finding a hotel room in that town that night was like searching for a missing person. 😂
