I think I figured the #NCAA out.
Imagine going out to a restaurant from your hometown. There's no prices on the menu. You ask what it costs to get the Thursday Special and they ask you what you'll pay. You look confused and say, "I don't know... How about $20?" The server brings you a paper plate with a bologna sandwich. Meanwhile, you look at your neighbor's plate and see they have a perfectly cooked steak.
"Excuse me, what did you order?" you ask.
"The Thursday Special," they reply.
Furious, you try to enjoy your meal, pay your bill, then go home. Outraged at the subpar performance, you leave a review on Yelp for the terrible product you received only to have an executive at Yelp contact you back.
"We received your review but we are confused why you only rated the restaurant 1-star." they say
"I only got a bologna sandwich, but my neighbor got a steak, but both were the 'Thursday Special'." you explain.
"Did you pay as much as them?" they ask.
"I don't know."
"Does your household make as much as them?"
"I don't know."
"How much do you think a good meal SHOULD cost?" they ask.
"I really don't know anymore..." you say.
"Exactly. And that's the point." They hang up.
This is how #NIL works.
I don't know if it was Mike Waddell or not, but I remember thinking that NC Sports Network had a really dumb tweet in response to the presser so somehow it wouldn't shock me.

Ok, counterpoint. Expectations changing after being "consistently good enough" is an obvious evolution of competitive occupations. A part of running any large enterprise is expectation management with your sponsor, employer, or governing bodiea. If Doeren felt the expectations were outpacing resources, it is reasonable that as "the guy in charge" it would be on him to actively manage those expectations with the administration.
This isn't a guy working a 9-to-5 making $90,000 a year to "just do his thing". His severance alone is more than many make in a lifetime so expecting him to do the same thing MANY senior professionals have to do in far less competitive situations isn't an unreasonable ask.
As someone who has consistently acknowledged Doeren is a "good coach", his fatal flaw was believing that consistently being "good enough" would buy him margin during down seasons. The issue with that is someone who is exactly "average" for 20 years and then has 1 extremely poor year is mathematically below average. Doeren was good enough to keep his job for 14 years, but not good enough to buy himself political capital to survive to a 15th. That's not on the admin.

Easy for him to hop on a one-sided Zoom and sound like he's blaming the fan base.
I think he's blaming the people who let him overstay.
They both did. Because "good enough" was fine.
Because this super stupid narrative is being propagated that wanting Doeren gone means you hate guy or don't recognize his wins. A ton of folks are treating this like breaking up with a high school girlfriend and it ain't that deep. This is a business decision, pure and simple.
This is 100% the right call. With conference realignment rearing it's ugly head, sticking with Doeren meant almost promising we'd become a mid-major because... Let's face it... Sticking with Dave due to "he's a great guy" is mid-major thinking.
BREAKING: In celebration of recent events, @Real_Pack_Man will now go by "Based Howell". Expiration of this name TBD.
GOOD.
NC State defensive coordinator DJ Eliot has also been fired by the Wolfpack.

The fact everyone keeps citing Doeren as the winningest coach in NC State history for his 14 years of service is the physical embodiment of quantity over quality.
I hope all the sunshine fans who crucified this author at least have the decency to internally acknowledge that their blind adoration of Dave failed them.
And there ya go. Boo did the right thing but tipping his hat.

NEWS: NC State has fired coach Dave Doeren. The firing comes in the wake of a loss at Stanford on Friday night. He went 98-74 over his 14 seasons there. NC State is 3-4 and 1-3 in ACC after the Stanford loss.
Ironically, I was JUST telling someone that this is the silver lining. This year is a trash year, most likely staring at a coach on life support. If there was a year I'd rather UNC break the streak, this year is the BEST year for it to happen... Because it would mean the least.

I’m a Unc fan and I’m not trolling or throwing shade bc I genuinely enjoy watching Dave coached teams they usually fly around in defense have high effort and lots of passion they play hard but it’s gone this year or at least it was last night and that makes me sad bc if we beat yall this year it’s kinda empty 😢 I want state at their best so it means more if we win
I actually don't blame Boo for this. It's easy to give the guy grief, but he's avoided Lee Fowler type searches and kept things tight. I appreciate his discernment because I'm not sure there's a single position he could publicly take that would end well.
What?! Even the sunshine fans are turning on ole Dave? Say it ain't so!!!
So, all it takes to pry these guys' lips off a millionaire's rear end is a decade and a half of mediocrity and multiple televised embarrassments.
Gosh, I'd hate to see what they're willing to let a program they hate go through...
"It's not my fault!"
Pray tell, coach. Who is responsible for training the kids to execute?
Hmmmmmmmmmmm...
"We had a guy right there to stop it, and he missed the tackle. We told them what play was coming in the helmet. We knew. We still didn't stop it."
