Markets are a mechanism for calculation, not a source of moral authority. I think it is up to each of us to work towards being devoted spouses, grateful children, loving parents, and dear friends who are true to our word, who stand resolute against evil yet forgive those who wrong us, and who lift the spirits of all we meet with kind words and an open heart. That is, markets can enable us to live good lives, but they won't do the living for us—and they can't supply the good.

Outside the gates of Marine Corps Air Station Futenma in Okinawa, television cameras often gather to criticize U.S. Marines. On October 4, 2020, Marine Staff Sergeant Billy Dixson stood at Mermaid's Grotto when a woman screamed at the sea. Her friend, an Okinawan resident named Ms. Miyagi, had been pulled out to sea by a violent rip current and had already vanished beneath the surface. No lifeguards were on duty at the rocky grotto. Fighting a rip current head-on exhausts even elite swimmers in minutes, so Dixson used his Marine water-survival training to ride the current out, dove three meters underwater where she was sinking, and locked his arm around her. He angled across the current, hauled her back onto the jagged rocks, and made sure she was breathing. Here is the part the television cameras missed. Once Ms. Miyagi was safe with her friend, Dixson dried off, drove back to his barracks, and went to work the next morning without telling a single soul in his chain of command. His commander, Colonel Henry Dolberry Jr., had no idea what Dixson had done until Ms. Miyagi walked up to the main gate of Futenma and handed the sentry a handwritten Japanese letter begging to thank the Marine who saved her life. A true warrior does not ask for a microphone after he stands his watch.

A few weeks ago, I participated in a live signing event on eBay for my friends at PCB Hobby. During the podcast, I took on four new sketch cover commissions. This is the third, a recreation of my Iron Man #142 cover @Marvel @PCBHobby @Iron_Man

NEW: Robert Reich calls for the "defunding" of Elon Musk, calls for Democrats to go after Musk's companies. "Democrats ought to [start] laying the groundwork for nationalizing Starlink & SpaceX... It should be a public corporation." Does he want Musk to drop another $50M on the midterms?

Mickey is right, though "learn to code" is outdated as many of those jobs are now AI-able. (I'm still optimistic that AI will create new opportunities, but I recognize it's a tough market esp for new computer science grads.)
“The hard fact is that Nixon lacks taste”--Arthur Schlesinger Jr., 1960. (That was designed to win over skeptical Adlai voters, I believe. But class snobbery is still one theme of Dem politics and policy--eg. screw those hillbillies if they won't learn to code when migrants do their former jobs.)

They were all trying to be that. They can't anymore. All the legacy software companies have to go back to working for their customers again.

I did it today. I went and voted. I voted against fascism. I voted against racism. I voted to protect my rights and all rights for all, the Constitution, and for democracy. That’s why I voted to a straight Wisconsin Republican ticket 🔴+1 ‘If fascism ever comes to America, it will come in the name of liberalism.’ - @RonaldReagan

Mrs and I saw the Elizabeth Holmes movie with Kid3. After an early scene, she learned over and said “That’s way longer than it needs to be.” I responded with a flat stare. “THAT’S not what I meant!”

"...By our count, armed citizens stopped 36.6 percent of the active-shooter incidents identified over those twelve years, nearly ten times the FBI’s 3.9 percent. Over the most recent five years, that figure rose to 42.5 percent. The percentage rises further when we consider only places where law-abiding citizens may legally carry firearms. After all, you can’t expect armed civilians to stop many attacks in places that prohibit them from carrying. Outside gun-free zones, we estimate that armed civilians stopped 56.3 percent of active-shooter attacks over the past five years..."
Yes, Armed Civilians Can — and Do — Stop Mass Shootings: Data ignored by the FBI show the importance of defensive gun use in bringing down active shooters Two days after last week’s attack on an Oregon elementary school, the @AP opened a news story with a familiar claim: “Few mass shootings in the U.S. end like the deadly attack on an Oregon elementary school: with an armed civilian opening fire on the gunman.” crimeresearch.org/2026/10/at… #2a #guns #GFZ #gunfreezone

Tuesday I’m substitute teaching (half-day) for the 5th grade. I hope my classroom mgt has leveled up. (There was a brief “I need a bandaid” mania during my day of 2nd grade. An older teacher helped quell it and made them return to their seats.)
