Solo dopo aver conosciuto la superficie delle cose, ci si può spingere a cercare quel che c’è sotto. Ma la superficie delle cose è inesauribile.

The beauty of Jean-Pierre Melville 💙 From ‘Le Samouraï’ and ‘Le Cercle Rouge’ to ‘Army of Shadows’ or ‘Bob le Flambeur’, the cinema of Jean-Pierre Melville, the undisputed master of French polar films, immersed us in a world of precision, silence, and moral codes.

Pier Paolo Pasolini on the dreamy nature of "Oedipus Rex" (1967): "I think the Prologue in 'Oedipus Rex' is one of the best things I have ever done. Obviously the evocation of the myth is less inspired and more deliberate. I wanted to re-create the myth under the aspect of a dream: I wanted all the central part of the film (which is almost the whole movie) to be a kind of dream, and this explains the choice of costumes and settings, the general rhythm of the work. I wanted it to be a kind of aestheticizing dream. Maybe the middle part isn’t so good, but I don’t think it’s because we don’t all have the whole myth in us. I wanted to represent the myth like a dream, and I could only present this dream by aestheticizing it; and perhaps this is what is disturbing." ("Pasolini on Pasolini", Oswald Stack, 1969)

Rainer Werner Fassbinder on the recurring theme in his movies: "Every decent director has only one subject, and finally only makes the same film over and over again. My subject is the exploitability of feelings, whoever might be the one exploiting them. It never ends. It’s a permanent theme. Whether the state exploits patriotism, or whether in a couple’s relationship, one partner destroys the other." "Jean-Luc Godard's 'À bout de souffle' (1960) is a film everybody can enjoy; it really touches people. I feel touched myself when I see it and this is what I don't like about the film... I don't like to be touched in that way." --- Rainer Werner Fassbinder
