Lindsey Graham’s passing sparked conversation and controversy on *how* to talk about the departed in public. I had some thoughts that may spark some…disagreement. thepunstack.substack.com/p/w… @KenGardner11 @QuinHillyer @JohnDalyBooks @brian_mistrot @EricMGarcia @BlueBoxDave

Watters: It is funny what he said about Saddam Hussein opening up a Cheesecake Factory, and then Bessent said the library looked like Darth Vader's tomb. We're talking about asses and architecture. This is the gayest midterm ever.

It was absolutely the right football play. The Packers were out of timeouts, and the Lions needed only to run out the rest of the clock and then kick the winning chip shot field goal. Online gambling threatens to ruin everything.
𝗧𝗥𝗘𝗡𝗗𝗜𝗡𝗚: NFL sports bettors are demanding that the FBI investigate the Lions after Jahmyr Gibbs took a knee instead of walking into the end zone for an easy touchdown. The betting spread was -3.5 for the Lions. An extremely suspicious ending 🧐

Johnny Carson never gave David Letterman The Tonight Show. Then he spent his retirement writing jokes for him. When Carson retired in May 1992, NBC gave the show to Jay Leno. Letterman left for CBS. Years later, Carson was retired in California. A friend said that every morning he read the paper and could think of five jokes he wished he had an outlet for. So he found one. He started sending jokes to Letterman, who sometimes used them in his monologue. Carson died on January 23, 2005. The first Late Show after his death opened with a monologue made entirely of Carson’s jokes. Paris Hilton’s dog. John Kerry’s medals. Donald Trump’s hair. Letterman told the audience who wrote them only after he had finished. That same night he said: “I owe everything in my professional career, whatever success we’ve attained, to Johnny Carson.” Keep this part. Some people never say it to your face. They just keep sending you jokes. Watch the clip. A peace offering, or a quiet verdict on who should have gotten the job?

ESPN's Tim MacMahon went IN on New York Knicks owner James Dolan 👀 "James Dolan was one of the NBA’s biggest villains for the vast majority of his tenure. He was one of the most despised people in New York City, and he’s done a great job of reminding people just why they despised him in the first place. And I’m just going to say it, Windy, you don’t have to chime in: the Knicks won a championship despite having a bad owner. They overcame bad ownership to win a championship." (via Hoop Collective)

In my book Kakistocracy, I note that Brazil locking up Bolsonaro after he attempted a coup put its democracy on a healthier course. Compare to America, where the prosecution took too long. Brazil dodged a bullet tonight. You can be right-wing! Stop trying to be authoritarians.

It's pretty clear that Black voters are furious about the Callais decision. Whether they can muster the numbers to actually punish the GOP for it anywhere in the South, is a more interesting question.
Haven’t seen much talk about this, but for the first time since at least 2008, Louisiana Democrats are outvoting their registration share in early voting. Black voter participation is also comparable to 2012, despite this being a midterm! (Data through Saturday Oct. 24)

Things I love about Tombstone: - Kurt Russell leaving his boring wife for some rando skank and this is presented as heroic - It came out in 1993 but Sam Elliott looks exactly the same as he does now - Everything Val Kilmer does - Everything Billy Zane does - The opening scene where the bad guys come into town and shoot everyone at a wedding. I stood up and CHEERED. You could have ended the movie right there and I would have been happy. - How Earp’s lunatic Revenge Tour of Murder was pretty much real and the cops had to be like hey … you’re not actually allowed to do that.
145 years ago today: 30 seconds in a dusty Tombstone lot gave us the most famous shootout in American history. And it didn't even happen at the O.K. Corral. Listen for yourself:

She was an arrogant and uncharismatic know-it-all, but she was also hard-working, well-informed, and competent and would have made a far far better president than any of the others we’ve seen on November ballots these past 10 years.
Happy birthday to this future president.

I’ve always voted Republican in the past, but after Trump’s insane Iran War and the economic war he’s declared on regular Americans’ wallets, this year I have no choice but to vote a straight Democratic ticket.
Lifelong moderate liberal here. With Democrats nominating radicals like Abdul El-Sayed, and Democratic Party leaders cheering him on, I think this is the year where it makes sense for all common-sense, moderate, reasonable Democrats like myself to vote straight ticket GOP

Well and good, but the principles on display here, at long last, were needed nearly two years ago when McConnell and the rest of the GOP rubber-stamped every unqualified Trump appointee and his already clear support for Russia.
GOP Sen. Mitch McConnell is threatening to block Trump’s legislative agenda unless he stops bending the knee to Putin. “Passing this agenda will require working with Republicans who know the difference between the good guys and the bad guys. Ending the obeisance to Mr. Putin may be table stakes for the end-of-year legislation. The president should plan accordingly,” McConnell wrote in The Wall Street Journal.”

This is what putting South Carolina first looks like. I’m honored to have the support of two former governors — Republican David Beasley and Democrat Jim Hodges. We may not agree on everything, but we share a belief that matters most: South Carolina deserves leaders who will always put its people first.
