More from the “no one cares about AI” chronicles — just a Republican in a tough race suing OAI less than two weeks from election day
BREAKING: Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton has launched a lawsuit against OpenAI and CEO Sam Altman, alleging they misled consumers about the safety of the company’s artificial intelligence chatbot and failed to protect users from harm.

It is truly very funny watching the “big-AI-Republican-consultant” industrial complex try to retreat to “no one cares about AI” as their talking point when they just tried to spend $100 million+ on the issue this cycle and stuff like the this keeps happening anyway
Sherrod Brown: Elon Musk Crowd: BOO!!! Sherrod: Peter Thiel Crowd: BOO!!!! Sherrod: Donald Trump Crowd: BOOOOOOO!!!!

Yes, AI is so irrelevant in Ohio that the NRSC begged the tech industry to spend money to bail out data center perceptions (which they did)

Prime example of what @adamkovac talks about of bandwagon groups running ads on the #10 ranked issue in the hopes of stealing credit for a victory that had nothing to do with them. Literally the playbook The Groups™️ run every cycle.

I am heartened to see the Republicans settling on “nobody cares about AI” as their strategy, though. And I hope they stay there!

First ad I've seen so explicitly targeting the obvious financial conflicts around the Trump administration's AI accelerationism

Well @TomorrowTgthr is going All-In on this election. We're even spending a bit on this fun one featuring Big AI's self-interested bestie David Sacks. (AI is a corruption story, and an affordability story, and a lack of control story, etc etc etc) xitter.cf/TomorrowTgthr/status/2…
NEW AD: Meet @DavidSacks, Trump’s AI and crypto czar. Republicans like Jon Husted are letting him flood our communities with data centers and block AI regulation. Sacks gets rich. His friends get rich. Husted gets their money. The only person who loses… is you.

🚨 @TomorrowTgthr expands to Ohio-SEN and Kansas-SEN 🚨
NEW: We’re spending $2.5 million on TV and digital ads in two Senate races, building off our $4 million buy in House races: – Ohio – Kansas Big Tech got billions in tax breaks to build data centers on our land and drain our water — Jon Husted and Roger Marshall voted to give it to them.

Is the Democratic party's organizing apparatus stuck in 2008? @yasminradjy: "We talk to voters way too late, the conversations are way too transactional, and a lot of the limitations are because of opinionated technology."

Big techs’s talking points are out and they are “be more like AIPAC” and “please don’t be mean to tech”
There are two kinds of outside-group ad: 1. Help an organization's allies by advertising on the issues that that candidate has identified work well in their favor, or against their opponent (typically identified through a redbox). This is usually NOT an issue the org itself cares about; the point is that the candidate appreciates the ads because it's a message that their internal polling tells them works. This is the strategy employed by AIPAC, crypto pacs, Leading the Future, and lots of others. 2. An ad on the organization's pet issue (like this ⬇️), which hasn't been identified as a candidate's favored message. The goal of these ads is really for the org to piggyback on the candidate's expected victory by spinning after the election that the race hinged on their pet issue. But candidates don't really like this, and it benefits the org's spin more than it builds appreciation for the candidate. This strategy is being employed by AI safety PACs, who are generally more interested in elevating the perceived salience of their issue than in building political allies.

NEW national survey from @NavigatorSurvey on AI Two-thirds want more regulation of AI, only 12% want less — and that holds across parties (74% of Dems, 61% of Republicans, 56% of independents) and even among people who use it every week and like it.

“@Rob_Flaherty warns that Democrats risk giving up ground if they fail to take big enough swings. Voters are ‘giving politicians a lot of leeway to take big swings and to really reimagine stuff,’ he says. If politicians only stick to basics like plans to retrain workers at community colleges, ‘I think we’re going to miss the bigness and the ingenuity that the moment calls for.’”

It may be time for me to step away from politics. I hope that enough Americans want to save our country. I hope that enough of us are going to vote this November.

What will @SamForstag do about AI safety if elected to Congress? FORSTAG: "I think that AI is the biggest existential threat we're facing as a country and as a species."

Why do so many Montanans hate Democrats, and how is @SamForstag changing that? FORSTAG: "I can truly emphasize with my friends and coworkers who had a sour look on their faces when I told them I was running as a Democrat."
