Get ready to wave to an asteroid 👋🪨
In 2029, asteroid Apophis will swing by Earth, passing safely about 20,000 miles from the surface. The OSIRIS-APEX mission will meet up with the asteroid shortly after, to map the surface and study its chemical makeup.

Power changes what’s possible on the lunar surface.
Our Power Tower is a 20-meter-tall, vertically deployed solar array system designed to provide more than 10 kilowatts of power for Moon Base operations at the lunar South Pole. Its modular architecture will support future surface networks, extending power beyond the lander to the assets that need it most.
Explore the concept in our animation below, then watch a successful real-world deployment: youtu.be/wcirOp_E2J0

Could asteroid 1998 KY26 resemble the failed Soviet spacecraft Phobos 1?
This animation compares the observed 82°-phase photometry with our rotating Phobos 1 shape model.

I rarely say this, but this is some pretty good work by NPR:
“Five-hundred colleges and universities in the U.S. now share one alarming distinction: At least 40% of recent students who borrowed federal loans aren't paying them back.”
“Were it not for federal student loans and grants, many of the schools on the list would close.”

The U.S. now has an “on orbit” space weapon to protect American forces, the Air Force secretary announced, in a not-so-subtle warning to China and Russia.
It marked the first time the U.S. has acknowledged its own offensive capability in space. wapo.st/4iXuG44

God I feel like a broken record but I can’t help it.
NASA is doing so good at fixing the public engagement problem, which is prior lack-thereof.
NASA should be omnipresent; there shouldn’t be a day that goes by that even normies don’t see Jared in the news, or a T-38 flyby, or even the big show in November.
It’s very evident that the current team, along with Jared, gets this. There’s not been an administrator in decades- maybe even ever, who has both understood this and has actually taken action on it.
I’ve said it a million times before but it rings true, NASA is cool, its actually hard to represent it as anything else but that.

This $161M contract allows us to invest substantial private capital alongside of the @USSpaceForce to rapidly advance the TRL of space nuclear power and propulsion systems.
We will integrate our R1S space reactor design with a spacecraft, complete a ground test, and in addition, power an operational space force ground asset with the Mark-1 demo.

I have spent 23 years documenting the global LED transition of city lighting from space.
Across my 4 missions to the ISS, I have photographed every major city on Earth, building a data set of the gradual replacement of sodium vapor lighting with LEDs.
The warmer, yellow-orange of gas discharge lamps has been phased out worldwide to multi-colored LEDs, citing energy savings and environmental reasons.
Widespread adoption has markedly changed the way our cities look from orbit, and as many have pointed out, how they feel to those on the ground!
Here is a collection of the most striking before-and-after photos I have observed:

Enter Sandman is a 25 year old Virginia Tech tradition and the reason Metallica added the school to their last tour.
Virginia Tech’s Geosciences department measured the equivalent of a magnitude 1 to 2 earthquake when the band played the song at that concert.
