#BookReview of The Sand Diamond
By Bethany Samaddar
@blsamaddar
“Do you like the color blue?”
The Sand Diamond is Bethany’s debut book. I was anticipating it, knowing from the words she shares on X, that it would immediately become one of my favorites.
“I think, Parijat, that the ocean belongs most to those who grieve. She fills our empty cups with her deep well of grace and wonder.”
Her words echo through my heart. So much of my life resonates in the book.
“I no longer needed a secure backyard to find out who I was; I needed an open horizon.“
Bethany has used that open horizon to skillfully weave characters the reader gets genuinely invested in.
"If I've learned anything about love, it's that it's the one thing that can't be destroyed."
The joy of reading a book that makes writing appear as natural and unforced as breathing,
And an author who can let the story carve its space in the reader’s heart
“Some read like beginnings waiting for a middle, others like middles cut short before the end. Maya had come to see these fragments differently.
The unfinished endured longer, settling deeper in the heart—like a poem that kept unfolding long after the pen was lifted.”
Would recommend this in a heartbeat for all readers.

Yesterday, my 13-year-old informed me that people in Australia do not, in fact, see the same moon as we do. Ever. Their moon is a mirror-image of ours, the positions of shadows reversed. She’ll spend most of her life knowing things that I’ve spent most of my life not knowing.

OK… Gabriela, let’s start ‼️‼️‼️ Let’s make Haiku an UNESCO recognized treasure ‼️
Who? Us 🌹
Literary Revelations announces a new anthology – Haiku: A Global Manifesto for UNESCO Recognition, in collaboration with the Haiku UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Registration Promotion Council.
This curated anthology is conceived not merely as a book, but as a living record of community consensus—a collective voice brought together to support the formal nomination of Haiku for the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity.
Statement of Support / 俳句ユネスコ無形文化遺産登録推進について
We are profoundly humbled
to share the official endorsement and message of support provided by Kenzo Nomura, Chairman of the Haiku UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage Registration Promotion Council:
“Haiku, the world’s shortest fixed-form poetry, originated in Japan and is now enjoyed in over 200 countries worldwide. This poetic form, which captures a moment in a few words, historically had a basic structure centered on seasonal words and a 5-7-5 syllable pattern. However, it has now spread both domestically and internationally in various forms, including non-seasonal and free-verse poems, likely because it is a poetic form that is easily accessible to people all over the world.
Haiku allows us to express everything from familiar things to the universe, condensing them into extremely short words. What haiku can contribute to the world is not only its appreciation of nature, but also its ability to cultivate the ability to view and think about subjects from a social and global perspective.
As haiku spreads throughout the world, it will foster greater awareness of the importance of harmony and cooperation. Even if its influence grows only little by little, we believe that haiku can contribute to building a better world.
Through the publication of this joint collection of haiku, we hope to share our philosophy with people around the world: that promoting the registration of haiku as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage is an expression of our heartfelt wish for world peace.”

I have a deep and abiding respect for history and a fascination with antiquities. This piece, for instance, is a hand carved Chinese jardinière made of hongmu (rosewood) from the late Qing dynasty, circa 1880.
It traveled through time and space to hold a pencil sharpener. Wild.

Some trees stand alone;
as some walkers do
measuring their pace
in solitary quiet
1
After four weeks
today I came to see you
and you knew, you knew
so you dressed up for the occasion
you'd grown past your bareness
your apparent lack of life
2
and knowing I'd come,
I'd come close to you
you put on your best colours
your distinctive scent
and you swayed in the breeze
3
and we knew, we knew
you knew I'd come
and I knew what you'd do for me -
for we are kindred spirits
you and I, made in nature's ways
4
and each time I've passed, these years
there are transfers between us
transfers beyond words and sighs
for we are kindred spirits, you and I
