I have been waiting 24 years for my neighbor David Westerfield to be executed for the kidnapping and murder of my 7-year-old neighbor, Danielle van Dam. And now thanks to @GavinNewsom, it looks like it will never happen. I was 13 when he abducted her from her bedroom in the middle of the night in 2002. I would never equate what I experienced with what her family suffered, but Danielle's murder devastated our whole neighborhood, and me personally. I was a sensitive kid and it was a major contributor to my mental health decline in adolescence. In the 20 days between her disappearance and his arrest, I developed insomnia and spent those nights walking around the house checking the locks on the doors and windows. I followed the trial closely. As we learned the horrific details, I couldn't stop thinking about what she endured during the 3 days he had her. Her body was found dumped off the side of a road 25 days after she went missing. It was too decomposed to test for sexual assault, but we all knew that's why he took her. He was also convicted of possessing child sexual abuse material found on his computer. There was never any doubt about Westerfield's guilt. There was an abundance of forensic evidence, including her blood on his clothing and in his motorhome. In 2019, the California Supreme Court unanimously upheld his conviction and death sentence. Shortly afterward, Newsom imposed his moratorium. And now he does THIS. California voters rejected abolishing the death penalty in both 2012 and 2016, and even voted to expedite executions. All these years, I've held on to the hope that someone would eventually take office who respected the will of California voters and would allow these sentences to be carried out. It's especially insulting to hear Newsom go on about morality, as if he is morally superior to those of us whose lives were affected by these heinous crimes and who want to see the perpetrators brought to justice. I'm hoping the California Supreme Court can stop Westerfield's commutation.
BREAKING: California Gov. Gavin Newsom has commuted the death sentences of all 548 people on the state’s death row to life without parole, in the largest mass commutation in modern U.S. history.

We call this Pseudo-profound bullshit. Admittedly quite crude, but succinctly fitting. (Seemingly impressive assertions presented as truisms and/or meaningful, but are actually vacuous) Many leaders who have risen to power learned how to spew this nonsense during their critical oratory years, because it’s quite effective on those of average to above average intelligence.

When Democrats screech about “affordability,” I laugh then cry. Why? I laugh because they think we’re all stupid. I cry because everything costs a lot more. Democrats were the ones who DESTROYED affordability in America. Look at inflation during the Biden years. The cost of homes and rent increased by 40% or more IN JUST FOUR YEARS. We saw the same increases in food costs and gasoline. A home you could have bought when Biden took office for $300,000, with a 2.75% interest rate and a monthly payment of only $1,000 to $1,100 cost $400,000 to $500,000 when he left office, with a 7%-plus interest rate and a monthly payment of $3,000 per month — or more. America has never seen such a dramatic change in affordability in just four years — the Biden years. Now, inflation is under control but it’s Trump’s fault prices are still high? Prices don’t decrease after inflation. They just increase a lot less, and they are. A few of us are paying attention. A few aren’t.

We no longer teach actual history, only revisionist history. In the financial and housing history that Mayor Parker received, the 2008 housing bubble was a problem of not giving out enough mortgages and homes to those who couldn’t afford it according to the math. Math is therefore racist (or at best, irrelevant). Give more mortgages, protected by the pocketbook of the city coffers! That’s the ticket!

NO! The bill is backward. Permanent Daylight Saving Time is worse than clock changes. AMEND it to permanent Standard Time!
🚨 UPDATE: President Trump is LIVID that the US Senate is refusing to vote to make permanent Daylight Saving Time "The United States Senate is letting the Daylight Saving Bill die, when a vast Majority of the Country want it. Most people are demanding light in the evening, but ALL want not to change their clocks anymore. TAKE A VOTE!" "As stated in The New York Post, 'Lawmakers in Washington have tried to kill the clock change for good, and this summer the House overwhelmingly passed the Sunshine Protection Act, 308-117, which would make Daylight Saving Time permanent year-round. That bill, however, remains locked in the Senate, meaning Daylight Saving Time will end as regularly scheduled to the disappointment of many Americans.'" Because the Senate recessed until after the November 3 midterms without acting, Americans will be forced to turn their clocks back an hour yet again this Sunday, November 1! Put it on the floor and pass it!

There are two ways of looking at the midterms, now less than three weeks away. One is as a simple referendum on the issues and politicians of the day. The other involves a far deeper conflict of visions (as Thomas Sowell puts it): socialism versus capitalism, intrusive versus limited government, and the destruction of time-honored institutions and traditions versus their preservation and renewal. Rarely in American history have the two parties been so far apart or the choice between them so stark. In brief, Islamist-sympathizing socialism is on the ballot against free-market capitalism and American exceptionalism. victorhanson.com/the-deep-mi…

So what I’m learning from watching the riots in France is that even the actual socialists who live in actual socialist countries run by actual socialist governments will still protest and set fire to things when it turns out they don’t actually like actual socialism after all.

Students supported Mao Students supported Castro Students supported Khomeini Students supported Hitler Students supported Mussolini If find yourself blindly supporting every student lead movement, you’ll be wrong very often, in many eras, on many issues.
A good rule of history: if you find yourself opposing a student movement while siding with the ruling class, you're wrong. Every time, in every era, whatever the issue.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Student movements have not always been on the right side of history. Mao's student Red Guards persecuted hundreds of thousands. When immigrants refuse to integrate into the host society's legal, linguistic, and commercial fabric, they create jurisdictional ambiguity. Ambiguity is where transaction costs breed. But that is only part 1 of the problem cascade. Consider the banlieues ringing Paris, where Sharia-adjacent informal courts settle disputes that French civil law theoretically governs. Two competing legal systems occupying the same geography produce institutional decay. Contracts become unenforceable across community lines. Capital avoids the uncertainty. Citizens pay that cost in stagnant property values and higher insurance premiums. But wait there is more. Language is infrastructure. A Turkish enclave in Berlin where 40% of residents speak no functional German represents a communication barrier that price signals cannot cross efficiently. Entrepreneurs cannot hire freely across that barrier without absorbing translation overhead. Labor markets fragment. Wages inside the enclave compress because the worker pool cannot compete in the broader market. Then, the welfare state makes it dramatically worse. State subsidies remove the market pressure that historically forced assimilation. Ellis Island immigrants learned English because the market paid them to. Today the German government pays families in Neukölln to remain monolingual, then wonders why parallel societies calcify across two and three generations. Non-assimilation creates a property rights problem across cultural barriers. Voluntary immigration into a free society demands adoption of its legal foundations. Anything less transfers real costs onto existing citizens without their consent, and that is simply redistribution without even a passport. Fast forward 20 years and you end up with this:

Dear Americans, Look at the images coming out of France these days. Burning streets, cars and buildings, blockades, a country where everyone is fed up and nobody can take it anymore. They look like a civil war. What you are seeing is not a crisis. It is a result. The result of at least forty-five years of bad decisions – and of lying about them. Yes, immigration plays a big part. But immigration can be managed in many ways. France chose socialism. Socialism and the lie: the French have been lying to themselves for forty-five years. Now they are paying. You cannot lie to reality. You always pay in the end. Here is the mechanism – watch it carefully, because it is on your ballot. In the 1970s, France worked. It was run by engineers and builders – Concorde, the TGV, the nuclear plants. A country where even an immigrant’s son could find his place and rise. Then power changed hands. The builders lost it to the bureaucrats of an oversized state. Those people produce nothing. They distribute, they regulate, they comment. In such a system you don’t rise by building. You rise by talking, positioning yourself, getting your share. Those who build become suspects. Those who distribute become the masters. And in socialism, nobody really rises. When all that’s left is sharing a cake that no longer grows, everyone resents everyone – often rightly. A country that no longer creates wealth integrates no one. It only distributes resentment. And all this is before the debt crisis, which is still ahead of France and will make everything ten times harder. America is still run, more than anywhere on earth, by builders. That is why you have rockets that land themselves and cars that fly. But the distributors are knocking: free this, guaranteed that, a new office to manage it, a new tax to fund it. It starts with kindness. It ends with the cake shrinking and the resentment growing. So before you vote, ask one question about every candidate: does he build – or distribute? Keep power with the builders. Let those who build decide. And let those who only talk be quiet. I’m Polish. We know how bad things can get. And we know how you get out – not in a day. First, stop lying. Then have the courage to tell the truth. Then start building – and never stop, and never again hand power to those who build nothing. Trust me: it is much easier never to go down that road.

The Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act carried a $1.2 trillion price tag and a noble-sounding name. Congress passed it in November 2021, Biden signed it, and the press celebrated. Roads, bridges, broadband. The whole sales pitch. What actually landed in the bill tells a different story. Genuine infrastructure spending, the kind that moves physical goods and connects people to markets, accounted for roughly $110 billion of that $1.2 trillion. Roads and bridges got $40 billion in new money. Passenger and freight rail received $66 billion. Broadband pulled another $65 billion. Add it up, and you are still well under 20% of the total, and the real figure for hard infrastructure sits closer to 10% once you strip out programs that would have passed in any normal appropriations cycle. The remaining $1.1 trillion went to things Congress rebranded as infrastructure. Workforce development, climate resilience programs, electric vehicle subsidies, community development block grants. This is how Washington operates. Take a word the public trusts, attach it to everything in the hopper, and dare anyone to vote against "roads and bridges." The label launders the spending. You pay for it through deficit financing that the Federal Reserve then monetizes, which erodes your purchasing power as reliably as a direct tax, just less visibly. No federal agency holds the information needed to allocate capital better than private investors who face actual profit and loss. Amtrak lost money on food service alone for thirty consecutive years before anyone noticed. The bill does not fix one pothole more efficiently because Amtrak now has $22 billion to spend. No government builds infrastructure. They pass the actual work to their connected cronies in the private sector, after taking their cut. At least we know Biden actually signed this in person.👇

Note that California is also experiencing significant power outages, which are due to typical weather conditions, not an extreme storm. While we pay far more for electricity, the infrastructure is inadequate to power the state. Californians, continue to vote for the same political party if you enjoy Third World conditions at First World prices!
They still have a lot of work to do. Many are still without power, especially in Florida.

Of course one would expect this stance out of Macron. The state must set the common framework of what is acceptable speech by its citizens! Firstly, he's a deeply entrenched politician; Macron exemplifies Lord Acton's proclamation "Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely." Almost don't need to say more... (but I will) Secondly, one would expect the tyrannical lineage coming out of the French Revolution to continue. If we recall, the goal was liberty, but the outcome was an authoritarian (Bonaparte). Macron is a fitting descendent!

However, yes, we can all live with permanent standard time. That is the only logical choice. After all, the continuity of our existence depends on the well-being of children.

Christ Jesus is not man’s production or projection upward. The Logos is antecedent to man and creation itself. The metaphysics of Being. Prometheus is not Christ (Logos). Promethean Action and intent roots in the metaphysic of Becoming. The New Man, The New Church, the Anthro-Ontology of Cosmo Erotic Humanism. Eros & Civilization, Libido Dominandi, AI, SI, Technocratic Feudal Rule via Systems Sovereignty. The Flame of the West is not Promethean fire stolen from Heaven. It is the Flame Imperishable that Prometheus can never steal. It is the uncreated Light; Christ the Logos, through whom all things were made and in whom all things hold together - the divine fire given and not stolen - the Holy Spirit. Man does not possess this Flame as its master. It is God’s gift, not man’s possession and the Logos is its measure - not the human will. The West did not make this Flame. The West was made intelligible beneath its uncreated light. As Tolkien reminded us; Melkor searches for this Flame but cannot find it ~ the Flame is ‘with Ilúvatar’.
