1997 Ford Escort WRC
The Ford Escort WRC is an iconic World Rally Car that competed in the World Rally Championship (WRC) during the 1997 and 1998 seasons.
Developed as an evolution of the legendary Escort RS Cosworth (Group A), it was hastily built to comply with the FIA's new World Rally Car regulations introduced in 1997, allowing manufacturers more freedom in modifying engine layouts and aerodynamics.
Key Technical Features
Engine & Powertrain:
Powered by a heavily tuned 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-four engine, coupled with an advanced permanent four-wheel-drive system.
Aerodynamics:
Retained the unmistakable and aggressive high-mounted rear spoiler, alongside revised front-end aerodynamics permitted under the WRC rulebook.
Team Management:
Developed and run by Malcolm Wilson’s M-Sport organization, marking the foundational era of the long-standing Ford-M-Sport factory partnership.
WRC Career and Highlights
The Escort WRC competed in a golden era of rallying against fierce rivals like the Subaru Impreza WRC and Mitsubishi Lancer.
Star Drivers:
Piloted by some of the sport's greatest names, including Carlos Sainz, Juha Kankkunen, Bruno Thiry, Armin Schwarz, and Ari Vatanen.
Rally Victories:
Claimed two WRC wins during its debut 1997 season, both secured by Carlos Sainz at the grueling Acropolis Rally in Greece and the Rally Indonesia.
Consistency:
Earned a string of podium finishes across 1997 and 1998, providing crucial points for Ford before the car reached the end of its competitive lifespan.
Legacy and Succession
Though its factory career was relatively short, the Escort WRC marked the grand finale for a legendary bloodline that stretched back to the Mk1 and Mk2 Escorts. At the conclusion of the 1998 season, Ford retired the Escort model from top-tier rallying and replaced it with the purpose-built Ford Focus WRC for 1999.
