People born in 1901 lived through two World Wars, Pearl Harbor, the Spanish Flu, and the actual Great Depression by the time they were 43 and went on to create one of the most vibrant periods in American history. Suck it up, buttercup
Millennials realizing they’ve lived through 2 economic recessions, 9/11, a global pandemic, 8 stock market crashes, their jobs being replaced by AI, and probably WW3 before hitting 43

As both a historian & a Millennial (born in 89), I've been pondering for quite some time why so many in my generation think this way. Because what we've lived through is not even remotely historically abnormal or chaotic. My idea: Our formative years came in the 1990s, an unusually peaceful period in global history, especially in the West. Childhood experiences anchor our views of normalcy well into adulthood; we Millennials are tacitly used to the world of the 90s, so when history returned with a vengeance, it felt overwhelming to many. But we haven't lived through anything prior generations didn't. Not even close.

Counterpoint: "International Law" is just how we explain the United States Navy to children and invalids, and the Navy ain't gonna do anything to stop him.

"Humans aren't meant to do this." Yes, that's the point.
Roller coasters have always freaked me out. Humans are not meant to do this. I don’t care how many safety inspections this thing has passed. No thank you.

This isn’t a matter of “please just text me”, nor is this like some Gen Z hates phones type thing. This is spam callers completely obliterating the trust of the common man answering the phone because so many of us get bots calling our number almost every day.

Brazilians apparently think this weird but I saw an American ask where a guy was from and the guy said “Mexico” and the American went “I know that but where in Mexico?” and it strikes me that this just another example of how America is not supposed to have its own cultural norms.

You guys stop. There is no way to argue that white men under 30 comprise any significant number of welfare recipients in Arkansas, whether by per capita or overall totals. Just admit when something was tone deaf and not grounded in reality.

Just so we’re clear on who is subsidizing whom. White men are 36% of the population and 39% of the labor force. They pay 62% of federal individual income taxes, 50% of federal payroll taxes, 70% of taxable capital gains, and account for about 10% of all welfare recipients.

White able bodied man here. Can someone walk me through how I go about getting welfare to play video games?
Some critics online don't like my welfare work requirement ad. Next thing you know they’ll say I should have used cookies instead of cheese balls. If you are able-bodied you should not collect welfare simply because you choose not to work. Period. WATCH->

The form of "education" that produced the mindset on display here is an excellent argument for abolishing student loan subsidies entirely; merely limiting them to productive degrees is an accelerated first step.
The higher education landscape is increasingly being divided between people who think education is a good in itself and people who think it's about somebody else's good. This is not a partisan political divide; it is about whether you believe in human freedom or not.

Yes, in fact, that is how it works. Understanding why this is will open your eyes to a great many ills of the modern world.

If I ever sound annoying or pedantic about armor in asoiaf shows, it’s because 6 year old me saw High King Peter roll up in this to face the army of the White Witch. My standards have rarely been met since

It's really much simpler than this: Don't trust libertarians.
Massie could have stuck with his opposition to the war and gone down as a principled, if politically shortsighted, martyr Instead it’s just “oppose everything Trump wanted no matter what” so he argues elections are perfectly secure, we don’t need voter ID, and other nonsense

Dark humor first has to be humor. Norm Macdonald saying of Steve Irwin’s death, “Hey, you’ll never guess who got killed…the Crocodile Hunter!” is an example of actually making a joke about someone’s death. You can find it insensitive — you may even be right — but there’s an identifiable joke. What you people do is basically cackle in maniacal ecstasy that Charlie Kirk was murdered on camera. There’s no joke. The “punchline” is just: “A young father who asked questions I felt I shouldn’t have to answer and who made me look stupid got murdered.” That isn’t “dark humor.” You’re just celebrating Charlie Kirk’s murder. Now, I don’t know if you don’t realize that — the same lack of awareness/intelligence that causes your collective not being funny — or if perhaps the celebration is so intense that it’s almost a disorienting religious or supernatural experience, but regardless, that is what you are doing.
Online MAGA used to talk about "free speech" and "dark humor" but immediately created their own form of cancel culture as soon as they got into power

America is so culturally dominant that most of the world doesn't consider it culture at all but simply a default state of existence.

"The most honest people in any society are the artists" Tucker Carlson? Or the journal of a Middle Schooler after their first trip to Paris?
The most honest people in any society are the artists, because they’re committed to beauty, which is truth. Jess Elofson is one of the few we have left.
