A lot of ppl on here have a two-dimensional concept of political leverage, based purely on negative pressure. Leverage also comes from joining a coalition, making your group indispensable, building trust & problem-solving together, while pushing firmly.

In the rush to build data centers, companies are starting to use their own off grid gas generators. This results in much higher emissions – 60% to 80% – compared with using their local electricity grid and risks locking in longer-term fossil dependence.

In the final days of Lula’s campaign, he promised free public transit on the weekend across Brazil. Will be incredible if he pulls that off.

Conflating clean energy and data centers is a policy choice—a choice we shouldn’t make!!!
NEW POLL: More than 3 in 4 voters (76%) would support a new transmission line in their community to connect more clean energy to the grid. In contrast, voters are 40 points less supportive of building transmission lines to connect more AI data centers.

The moment demands “that we reevaluate the left’s achievements, its limits, its tactics, its repertoires and its ability to mobilise… alternatives must be created that match the political-cultural revolution launched, with such astounding success, by the rival camp.”

To understand Lula’s challenge, a must-read: Brazil’s far right has produced a “revolutionary individualism… seductive and far-reaching, regardless of its cynicism, its collusion with the most brutal forms of plunder and dispossession…”

The world’s largest tropical rainforest shows the difference between socialism and fascism
The Amazon is on the ballot when Brazil picks its president next Sunday >On its own, the Amazon rainforest may survive 3-5°C of warming >With deforestation, its point of no return drops to 1.5-1.9°C >We’re basically already there today >The good news: deforestation in Brazil’s Amazon is down 4 years in a row, to its 3rd-lowest level in 38 years Cutting down trees is something we can stop fast. But not with the wrong president academic.oup.com/bioscience/…

To quote a colleague, on another topic, these academics "really are Kuhn's theory in human form." Scholars so wedded to their worldview that they will fight to the last man (and it's usually men amirite) before they let a chink of light or novelty through. Slow clap.
The algorithm now shows me a lot of the German economists' pearl clutching at @IsabellaMWeber price controls and dear God, how I've underestimated the dark powers of ordoliberalism.

There will be an AI market correction soon. Some will say “I told you so- it’s just a scam.” But the crash will only *slow* tech development. We still face a massive reckoning over the future of work, climate, and political economy overall.

Europe has caved to the fossil lobbies because it cannot get its act together for state-driven structural transformation. this is an admission of defeat to Made in China 2025 industrial policy. it is also terrible climate policy.
Germany's Chancellor Merz: Germany and France reached an understanding on future policy toward the automotive industry. To put it very simply: The ban on combustion engines is now history.
